4-Hers Meet with Legislators in Augusta and Washington

April 2001--Maine 4-Hers had opportunities to meet with their legislators at two events this spring, Government Day and National 4-H Conference.

Government Day took place on April 10th at the State House in Augusta.  Ten teens from Hancock County participated, serving as pages in the House and the Senate.  The 4-Hers met with county legislators, talked with lobbyists, and visited with state officials.  They also had the opportunity to pose questions to the legislators on matters of personal interest to them, such as environmental legislation.

At National 4-H Conference, Maine 4-H delegates met with their senators and congressmen on Capitol Hill.  Conference took place April 1 - 7 at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD.  Each year, Maine sends four delegates to Conference.  To read more about the Conference experience, see page 8 for an essay written by South Carolina 4-Her Sky Harris.

At Conference, 4-Hers pose with Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins in Trent Lott's office.  Extension Educator Beth Parks far right.
