What is Mainestreet used for?
Mainestreet is used for signing up for classes, checking grades, checking financial aid information, entering hours for student employees. The account is also used for signing into WebCT and Blackboard.
How do I activate my Mainestreet Account?
You should have received the activation information in the mail, if you have not or have forgotten the information you will need to contact the IT Help Center to activate the account or reset the password. When calling the IT Help Center please have your Mainestreet ID number available if possible.
I have activated my Mainestreet account, where do I login?
The Mainestreet Login can be reached a number of different ways. The easiest way is to put mainestreet.maine.edu in your browsers address bar. This will redirect you right to the login page. Please do not bookmark the login page, but instead bookmark http://mainestreet.maine.edu.
What is the Mainestreet ID Number? Is it my social security number?
The Mainestreet ID Number is a 7-digit ID Number given to you by the University. It is randomly generated as a unique identifier, NOT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. Each student and staff member has an ID Number. The IT Help Center uses this number to help verify your identity.
Where can I get my Mainestreet ID Number?
The Mainestreet ID Number will be displayed in the “Student Self-Service” section of MaineST. It will appear at the top of the page on the right hand side.
What if I forgot my Mainestreet Password?
If you have forgotten your Mainestreet Password you can go to http://mail.maine.edu to reset it. Once at http://mail.maine.edu click on “Reset a Lost Password”. This will ask for your Mainestreet ID Number and your Username. The next screen will have you put the same ID Number and Username in. You will then answer two of your security questions and enter in a new password. Once the password has been successfully changed, you will have to wait about 30 minutes before you will be able to login.
How do I forward my @maine.edu email to another account?
You can forward your @maine.edu email by going to the website “mail.maine.edu” and clicking on “Change the destination of my @maine.edu email”. After you enter your username and password, you will be given the option to choose the destination of your email. You can choose from your Firstclass or enter in a 3rd party email.
WebCT & Blackboard Questions:
What is WebCT & Blackboard?
WebCT and Blackboard are online resources used in many online classes. There may be content for your live class on either WebCT or Blackboard. The username and password that you should use is the same as your Mainestreet Username and Password. Please do not bookmark the login for WebCT or Blackboard as this may cause issues when trying to login in the future. If you would like to bookmark, please use the following:

Why is my course not listed in WebCT?
If your course is not listed in your “My Courses” please double check that you are enrolled by contacting the Office of Student Records at 207-581-1290. Once confirming that you are enrolled in the course, please contact the Help Center at 207-581-2506.
Why is my course not listed in Blackboard?
If your course is not listed in blackboard, please double check that you are enrolled by contacting the Office of Student Records at 207-581-1290. If you are currently enrolled you will need to contact the Blackboard Help Desk at: 1-800-696-4357
What is FirstClass used for?
FirstClass is the University of Maine’s E-mail and conferencing system. It is used by all students and most faculty and staff.
How do I activate my FirstClass Account?
To activate your FirstClass Account, you will need to go to the following website: http://www.umaine.edu/FirstClass you will use your Mainestreet username and password to go through the activation process. You will set a password for your FirstClass account, and the username will be given to you at the end of the activation process. The username will be in the format of [last-name][first-initial][middle initial][number]. Example: smithjr5
Do I need both?
Mainestreet is used for signing into the Mainestreet Portal, WebCT and Blackboard, as well as logging into the computers in the computer clusters and for wireless and dorm internet access. FirstClass is the email of choice of the UMaine Community. Your Mainestreet account does come with an email address as well, usually email@example.com. You should go to http://mail.maine.edu and forward this email to either FirstClass or to some other account that you regularly check so you will not miss important administrative information.
What if I forgot my FirstClass Password?
If you have forgotten your FirstClass password you will need to contact the IT Help Center in person at 17 Shibles Hall or by phone at 207-581-2506. Please have your Mainestreet ID Number available. After we reset your FirstClass password you will be able to login immediately.
Where can I get the FirstClass Software?
The FirstClass software is available for download off the UMaine IT Website. http://www.umaine.edu/it/software/FirstClass/ is the direct link for the download.
I get the error “There is no FirstClass Server with that name on the network. Check your connection setup”.
Please ensure you are online and can access other network resources. If you can successfully connect to web pages and messaging programs please check the server in the FirstClass Client.
To do this: click on Setup at the FirstClass login page, for the Server section; please ensure fc.umit.maine.edu is entered in that field. Any further issues please call the IT Help Center at 207-581-2506.
I have a course on FirstClass but I can’t find it, where is it?
Courses in FirstClass will be either added by your professor at the beginning of the semester or located in the Academics folder. To access the Academics folder, go to Student Resources à Academics à (Fall/Spring/Summer) of the Current Year à Your course will be listed here if the professor has made it a public course. You can right-click your course and choose “Add to desktop”, this will place the icon on your FirstClass Desktop so you can easily access it in the future.
I don’t have “Student Resources” on my desktop.
If you don’t have Student Resources on your FirstClass Desktop, please contact the IT Help Center at 207-581-2506.
I can’t find my course in the Academics Folder, what should I do?
If your course is not listed in the Academics Folder then you will need to contact your professor to have them add you as a Subscriber to the course. This will put the icon on your FirstClass Desktop.
I have my course on my desktop but I get an error: “Sorry you are not permitted to perform that function”?
If you are getting this error, you will need to contact the professor and ask them to give you permission to the course folder. Once they do this, you should be able to access the course content.
Why do I have so many accounts?
Every student in the Maine System gets a Mainestreet Account. Here at the University of Maine, we also have FirstClass.
How can I get on wireless?
The wireless network on campus is called “Tempest” and is located in all academic buildings and the common areas of dorms. After you connect to Tempest for the first time, you will need to open a web browser. You will be redirected to a registration page where it will ask for your Mainestreet username and password. After you enter this information, you will be asked to restart your computer. After you restart you should be all set.
Do I have wireless in my dorm?
Wireless is located in the common areas of the dorms and is not guaranteed to work in your dorm room. You may get a signal or some connection but it is intended you use the provided Ethernet jack to connect your computer.
How can I get connected to the wall jack in my room?
Cables are provided and are located at the bottom floor of each dorm. There are two data jacks in each room (one for each resident). There is also a phone jack which the Ethernet cable will fit into, please make sure you plug into the jack labeled “Data”.
I plugged into the wall jack and still can’t get connected, what’s wrong?
There can be a number of different reasons why your computer cannot get connected. The IT Help Center is staffed during Fall Welcome Weekend to assist you in getting your computer connected in your dorm room. Please call us at 207-581-2506.
