Welcome to International Affairs
Welcome to the home page of the International Affairs program. The University of Maine’s trans-disciplinary International Affairs major has broad dimensions while it integrates the information, strategies, and techniques of eight diverse concentrations: International Security; Comparative Politics and Area Studies; History and Development of the Global System; Culture, Conflict and Globalization; Economics; Language, Culture and the Humanities; Canadian Studies; and Global Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
Our graduates find that an International Affairs major is flexible in respect to the variety of careers it prepares them to pursue. Many of our graduates pursue graduate work. Our School of Policy and International Affairs (SPIA) and the Maine Business School are among their options. Others directly enter international foundations and development organizations, international business, the public and diplomatic service, education, journalism and electronic media, environmental organizations, or international humanitarian work.
Students extend their learning beyond the classroom. A student-run organization, the International Affairs Association (IAA), plays a major role in international education at UM. The IAA brings visitors of international distinction to campus for lectures and informal discussions with students, organizes special cultural events and participation in the McGill Model United Nations at Montreal every January. The IAA also takes a leading role in bringing together other student organizations with an interest in international affairs.
Our International Affairs home page has comprehensive up-to-date information on our concentrations, requirements, and curriculum. Feel free to browse our page. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
