Modern Languages and Classics

Study Abroad

Students majoring in a Modern Language are encouraged to spend a summer, a semester, or an academic year in a previously approved program of study at a foreign university as a part of their program. Up to thirty-six credits may be earned through these programs, pending previous consent of Dean and Chair involved.

Nova Scotia CoastlineCanada Year Program:
The Department of Modern Languages and Classics, in collaboration with the Canadian-American Center, arranges for UMaine students to spend a year or a semester at a Canadian university, including the country's French-speaking universities. In recent years, UMaine students have studied at Université Laval (Quebec) and University Sainte-Anne (Nova Scotia). For more information, contact Betsy Arntzen at: Betsy.Arntzen@umit.maine.edu or visit the Canadian-American Center at 154 College Avenue, Orono, Maine.
Salzburg ViewSalzburg Program:
The New England Study Abroad Program at Salzburg affords the student the opportunity to participate in the intellectual life of a great university situated in a major European cultural center. Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the site of the renowned Salzburg Festival, is a symbol of the great music of Europe. With its imposing churches and castles and its magnificent Alpine scenery, Salzburg fills the ears and eyes as well as the minds of all who study there. The cost for a year abroad in Salzburg is equivalent to that to the year on the Orono campus at in-state rates. Also, your regular financial aid here will continue to apply there.
Quebec CastleQuebec Mayterm:
A total immersion program in French Quebec is offered during May Term, FRE 297/497, 3 credits. This two-week immersion in French allows students to move toward greater fluency in their language skills by asking them to take an active role in determining group work and program activities. Through these activities and excursions planned by the program director and staff, students also gain a greater awareness and understanding of Quebecois history and culture. More...
NantesWestern France (FRE 398):
This is a 14-day total immersion program in French equivalent to three academic weeks and worth three academic credits.  The goals of the course are to encourage students to use French actively as a natural part of daily life and to develop heightened appreciation for French culture, society and history with a special focus on Nantes and Brest, the location of two of the University of Maine System’s partner institutions for student exchange, the Université de Nantes and the Université de Bretagne Occidentale.
Travel dates will be May 17 to May 31, 2008.  For information contact Professor Jane Smith at Jane.Smith@umit.maine.edu
