FRE398 Immersion: Western France

A two-week total immersion program offered in Western France.

This course satisfies the General Education Cultural Diversity and
International Perspectives requirement.

Prerequisites: FRE 212 or equivalent or permission. Cr 3.

ITINERARY

  • Day 1: Arrival at Charles DeGaulle Airport, Paris; departure for Nantes by TGV ; travel by vans to LaRochelle. Housing while in LaRochelle will be at Les Sables d’Olonne.
  • Day 2: Exploration of LaRochelle including Le Musée du Nouveau Monde, le port de La Rochelle et l’Ile de Ré.
  • Day 3: Travel to Brouage, the birthplace of Samuel de Champlain.
  • Day 4: Travel to Angers. Housing while in Angers will be at the Centre d’acueil International du Lac du Maine.
  • Day 5: Exploration of Angers led by a student at the Université d’Angers. Sites to visit include La Doutre, les Halles, Château d’Angers, la Maison d’Adam, la Cathédrale St-Maurice, le Jardin du Mail, and le Jardin des Plantes.
  • Day 6: Travel along the Loire River to Saumur. The morning to be spent in Saumur. The afternoon includes a stop at the Église St-Pierre, viewing Troglodyte homes on the way to the Abbaye de Fontevraud.
  • Day 7:
  • Travel by van from Angers past Tours and some of the best-known châteaux in the region (Chinon, Ussé, Langeais, Azay-le-Rideau) on the way to an afternoon visit of Chenonceau.
  • Day 8: Travel to Pleine Fougères. Housing while at la baie du Mont Saint-Michel will be at the Centre International du Séjour " Le Mont Saint-Michel”.
  • Day 9: Travel to St-Malo intra-muros for a tour of this medieval, walled city. Sites to visit include Chateaubriand’s birthplace, Jacques Cartier’s home, the Cathédrale St-Vincent. At low tide, we walk to the Île du Grand Bé where Chateaubriand is buried. The afternoon will be spent in Limoëlou the site of Jacques Cartier’s manoir.
  • Day 10: Visit Mont-Saint-Michel in the morning. The afternoon is free.
  • Day 11: Travel to Paris by TGV. Housing in Paris at the Centre International de Séjour de Paris. After a mid-afternoon walk through the Tuilleries Gardens, three hours remain to visit the Louvre, after which we will dine on the Rive Gauche and view the Eiffel Tower at night.
  • Day 12: Early morning visit to the Île de la Cité and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. Walk along the Seine to the Musée d’Orsay for a two-hour visit. Optional visits of the Musée Rodin and the Invalides on the way to the Trocadero and the Arc de Triomphe.
  • Day 13: Small group expeditions to Sacré Coeur, Montparnasse and the Rive Droite.
  • Day 14: Early morning departure for the airport to catch an afternoon return flight to the US.
