Placement Exam For French, German, and Spanish
Information on placement and credit exams can be found at:
http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=maine
Should you wish only placement, there is no charge.
All incoming students who plan to continue the language they studied in high school must take the placement exam for that language. "Incoming" refers to first-year and transfer students who have no foreign language study at the college level for which credits are transferred. The test is an online exam and may be taken at any time. The address and password are listed above. Immediately upon completion of the test, the score and level of placement will be sent to you. Students whose score falls within ten points either above or below the cut-off score for a given level should confirm their placement with the faculty member who coordinates the course (elementary or intermediate) for that language.
For a fee, a student may take this test for credit by declaring his or her intention to do so at the time they take the exam. No credit will be given at the elementary language level, though credit at the intermediate level will be awarded as follows:
You will be eligible to receive credit for 203 and 204 by skipping the Intermediate course (204) and passing a higher level course(s) with a grade of B- or better (e.g. FRE/GER/SPA 305). If you take the exam for credit during the summer or within the first two weeks of classes, you will be charged $10 for each semester of credit (FRE 203/204). Once you have taken the online placement test, print out the results and keep them. You will need to bring them to the Department. If you take the exam after the second week of classes, the fee is $125 per course for which credit is awarded. No credit will be awarded retroactively.
Please make the check payable to the University of Maine. It may be either mailed or delivered to, Director of College Success Programs, East Annex, Room 118, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469
Once we have your results, we will proceed to determine your placement and credit.
