Project Sponsors Steps to Creating the Poster

Creating this post was actually more involved than what was originally assumed it would be. This poster was created by coupling the programs Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Adobe Illustrator 10.0. Before creating this poster the group had no idea of how powerful these programs actually were.

The first step is to visualize a design that would be both appealing and functional at the same time. the first part involved sketching a couple of poster templates on paper before deciding on a design that would be the best choice. Next was to come up with a color scheme that would work well together while still portraying colors unique to the University of Maine. The group chose the dark blue, which is one of the primary colors commonly associated with the University of Maine. The next step was to determine which colors would complement the dark blue color. Instead of choosing white for the background of the poster, the group decided to select a sienna hue to compliment the dark blue.

Illustrator was used to produce the UMaine Engineering logo, along with the vector drawing of the snowmobile which is recessed behind it. Using Illustrator allows any figure created in it to be resized if necessary without loosing pixel quality. Since this poster would be used at the 2004 SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, the group decided to add some technical qualities to the background. Creating the blueprints for the 4-stroke engine and the Continuously Variable Transmission was particularly challenging. The color, stroke, and opacity of each line on the blueprintshad to be changed and resized to fit the background.

After the template for the post was completed, the next task was to create text and pictures for the template. This was done in Illustrator and then exported to Photoshop. The text had to be matched to the borders on the template, and the pictures had to be resized to fit into the background.

These posters proved to be useful in the static display even at the competition. They also helped the Univesity of Maine to add a degree of professionalism to the project display.
