Senior Design Project by Martha Callnan and Nicole Ezzo

All About The Tow Tank

 Tow Tank Design Parameters

 — The tow tank is 120ft long, 8ft wide and 4ft deep.  It holds 25,000 gallons of freshwater and is filtered to prevent any biological growth.  Currently there is a stainless steel tape drive which runs an 8ft by 4ft aluminum carrage at a speed of 2.5m/sec (about 5 knots).  The steel tape is driven by a 5.6kW (7.5hp) three phase motor and is subject to a maximum drag         Martha Callnan and Nicole Ezzo
force of about 538 N (121 lbf).

The Focus

— The purpose of this project is to design a drive belt system for the tow tank which will eliminate the belt contact and prevent slip in the belt.  A new design of the dynamometer with proper leves of measurments will also be obtained to increase the measurement capabilities.
