Project: Human Powered Submarine --
                             Biomechanics

Background:

One of the most interesting parts of engineering is the interface between the human and the machine.  This is particularly true, when the power of the human is used to operate the machine.  Take an athletic challenge, add a complex machine and then put on scuba gear, and the result is a challenge for the athlete, the engineer and the scuba diver.

Success in the 2009 Human Powered Submarine competition for UMaine required a trained, prepped and competent driver.  This team will focus on training, preparing and testing the operator(s) for the 2010 machine competition in England.  The motion of the human powered submarine ins a stair stepping motion, so training of specific muscles will be part of the game.  The team will work with biomechanics an scuba divers to develop training and to replicate the motion of the operator.  Then, using a series of tests will prepare to operate the submarine.

Deliverables:

1. Compile list of regulations, and protocols which must be =followed for preparing the divers for the competition.

2. Propose a training scheme, justify the scheme based on literature for training and the length of the competition

3. Prepare a scuba certified and race ready team

4. Demonstration of operational of submarine on land

5. Demonstration of submarine in water
