Residual strength of metal particulate reinforced ceramic composites with multiple cracks

Fracture toughness of brittle ceramics may be improved through the addition of the dispersed ductile particulates. A primary mechanism of the enhanced toughness is believed to be crack bridging by ductile metal particulates in brittle matrices. Although progress has been made in understanding the residual strength of cracked ductile particulate reinforced brittle composites, strength behavior of particulate reinforced ceramic composites with multiple cracks has not been studied. In this presentation, a methodology is presented to theoretically study the residual strength of ceramic-matrix composites containing ductile metal particulates on the basis of bridging law and fracture criterion of stress intensity factor. The Fourier transform and integral equation method is used to solve the mixed boundary value problems of particulate reinforced ceramic composites with parallel cracks. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effect of crack spacing on the residual strength behavior of particulate reinforced ceramic composites. The residual strength results are helpful in materials selection and structural design in engineering application.
