Compressor Module for Heat Recovery Heat Pump
in the Engineering and Science Research Building
| Background: Last year a team completed the designed a new building ventilation air heat recovery system using an advanced vapor compression refrigeration cycle in a heat pump configuration for the addition to Barrows Hall known as the Engineering Science Research Building. This year’s project will build on that foundation and develop design tools which will allow the heat pump, module design and cols to be adapted for use in a number of buildings on campus. This design is adaptable to any building with a large quantity of air discharge as a result of laboratory ventilation requirements. The 2008 design team showed that the heat recovery system would save approximately $15,000 and 28,000 gallons of #6 oil burned at the steam plant per heating season. Additional savings would be realized during summer for cooling air conditioning but these were not quantified in last year’s project as they will be lower. The project from last year was selected for funding under the University Green Loan Fund. This will allow those savings to propagate throughout the relevant buildings on campus. |

Deliverables 1. Complete review of design of ESB installation of heat recovery system and review Green Loan fund plans for implementation 2. Develop guidelines for applicability of system for other buildings on campus, including quantity of makeup air and total building size 3. Develop standard cost benefit spreadsheets for review of additional building installations 4. Create a one stop shop for the design of system including piping, coils and compressor design, as well as design software, users guides and recommendations on complexity of the system for application in laboratory building air systems. 5. Visually appealing and technically sophisticated web site with building performance monitoring provided on-line for ESB installation (including a cost savings calculator). 6. Complete design for a second heat recovery system for an appropriate building on campus. |
