School of Nursing Extra Expense List

There are a lot of extra expenses during nursing school that are not covered under the student bill and which most nursing students are not aware of. A list of the extra expenses, compiled from nursing student input, is below:

Freshman Year

  • OSNA membership: $5.00 for 12-month membership
  • National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) & Student Nurses’ Association of Maine (SNAM) membership: $25.00 for 12-month membership (first-time member rate)
  • NSNA mid-year and/or annual convention (optional; with OSNA assistance): Fees vary, but could include registration, some travel expenses, food, and spending money
  • SNAM Annual Convention: approximately $40.00
  • Family Activity Pass (optional; for commuter students only): You can purchase a family activity card to get your immediate family (or people you are living with) into paid sporting events. If you like sports and you live with your mom and dad, or you are a non-traditional student with children, you pay $40.00 per person and it will get them into all football, hockey, basketball, and baseball games. Everyone has to sit in student seats and it is “first come, first served” seating.

Sophomore Year

  • OSNA membership: $5.00 for 12-month membership
  • NSNA & SNAM membership: $35.00 for 12-month membership (renewal membership fee)
  • NSNA mid-year and/or annual convention (optional; with OSNA assistance): Fees vary, but could include registration, some travel expenses, food, and spending money
  • SNAM Annual Convention: approximately $40.00
  • CPR certification: $20-25 through OSNA (will cost more outside of OSNA); good for two years.
  • Uniforms for sophomore clinical (can be used junior and senior years as well): between $200.00 and $400.00 depending on where you go.
Stethoscope: between $20.00 and $200.00 depending on which brand you buy.
  • Gas to sophomore clinical for 2 weeks: approximately $30.00, but depends on where you drive to and from.
  • Room accommodation during sophomore clinical (optional): It costs extra to stay on campus for the two weeks of clinical. Exact amount is unknown, but available by calling the University of Maine. The fraternity houses rent rooms for those two weeks as well.
  • Dining expenses during clinical (optional): The dining commons are not open during the two week clinical period, so you need to eat at the Union or buy groceries.
  • Family Activity Pass (optional; for commuter students only): $40.00 per person

Junior Year

  • OSNA membership: $5.00 for 12-month membership
  • NSNA & SNAM membership: $35.00 for 12-month membership (renewal membership fee)
  • NSNA mid-year and/or annual convention (optional; with OSNA assistance): Fees vary, but could include registration, some travel expenses, food, and spending money

  • Scissors and Kelly Clamp for clinicals: Approximately $40.00, depending on where you buy them.
  • Extra book reference guides: Nursing books are very expensive. In your Junior year, your nursing books alone will cost more than $600.00 (new; used are sometimes available).
  • Family Activity Pass (optional; for commuter students only): $40.00 per person

Senior Year

  • OSNA membership: $5.00 for 12-month membership
  • NSNA & SNAM membership: $35.00 for 12-month membership (renewal membership fee)

  • CPR re-certification: $20-25 through OSNA
  • Pinning donation: You are required to give $20.00 for the pinning ceremony and senior donation
  • School of Nursing pin: Optional, but most people get them so they have something to be pinned with at the pinning ceremony. They range from approximately $26.00 and up
  • Mosby Assessment Test: $40.00
  • Family Activity Pass (optional; for commuter students only): $40.00 per person

If you have any questions or concerns about the extra finances please be sure to talk to the Financial Aid office. They may be able to work with you to help with these extra fees.

There is a possibility that all extra expenses may not be listed, so don’t be surprised if something else comes up.

OSNA hopes that you find this list helpful. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
