We were all shocked to hear of Al Reeve's sudden death on May 5, 2001. We
had seen him happy and healthy the week before at the PAA meeting in St.
Augustine, Florida. Al was currently serving as chair of the Finance Committee
and was one of the three founding contributors to the PAA
Endowment Fund. It would be a fitting tribute to Al to make a donation to the PAA Endowment Fund in
his honor.
The Aroostook County Farm Bureau is also setting up a memorial fund for Al:
AL REEVES MEMORIAL FUND
The Alvin Reeves Memorial Fund monies will be used as follows:
- First $4,000 to be used to print 10,000 copies of the "Guide to Northern Maine Potatoes,"
written by Alvin Reeves for the Northern Maine Museum of Science. Donors, the museum and the Maine Ag in
the classroom program will distribute these copies
- Second $2,000-3,000 to be used to purchase additional copies of the guidebook, if desired by the
committee, hardbound copies for regional libraries, donors, committee members and to be distributed to
friends of Alvin Reeves by the Reeves' family. Remaining monies from this portion of the fund will be given
to the Maine Agri-Women to be placed in an interest-bearing account and used for distribution of the
guidebook to Maine classrooms and interested people for the foreseeable future.
- Any monies beyond that needed to do the above, provided that the amount is at least $5,000, will be
used to establish an "Alvin Reeves Memorial Scholarship." A draft description of the
scholarship follows:
"The Alvin Reeves Memorial Scholarship honors Dr. Alvin Reeves, Aroostook Country potato breeder,
University of Maine faculty member at the Agricultural Research Farm and Curator of Agriculture at
the Northern Maine Museum of Science. Dr. Reeves set high standards for scientific research and community
service. This award is given annually to a University of Maine at Presque Isle student who demonstrates
high proficiency in science studies or museum work, and shows special interest in community service."
Decisions on the dispersal of funds, using the above as a general guide, will be made by a committee.
Tax deductible donations to this fund may be sent to:
