UMaine Researcher Honored |

Douglas Gardner, University of Maine
professor of Wood Science and Technology, and a member of
the UMaine Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center’s
research team, has been named as one of the co-recipients
of the 2008 Forest Products Society L. J. Markwardt Wood
Engineering Research Award for the paper "Evaluation of
Load Transfer in the Cellulosic-Fiber/Polymer Interphase
Using a Micro-Raman Tensile Test." The paper was
published in January 2007 in Wood and Fiber Science
published by the Society of Wood Science and Technology.

Canning Information Available from Extension |

Rising food costs have caused more than
the usual number of Mainers to plant gardens this year.
Many may be thinking about preserving their harvest for
the first time—or dusting off old canning equipment.
Those who plan to can garden surplus this year should be
sure to get up-to-date information. Updated
recommendations are available at University of Maine
Cooperative Extension office in each Maine county. Those
who are interested may call 800-287-0274 to find the
closest Extension office.

Grad Student Poster Wins Award |
 |
Julie-Ann Scott's Poster entitled
"Subversive Bodies' Extraordinary Stories: A Performance
of Identity Analysis of Physically Disabled Professionals
Personal Narratives" received an award for the top poster
at the Society for Disability Studies (SDS)annual
conference in New York City. SDS is an international
conference drawing disability studies scholars from
around the world. Research featured in the poster
reception included scholars from across different fields
and ranged from graduate students to faculty members. For

UMaine IPhD student who is also the Graduate Center
Coordinator, the Graduate Student Government Grants
Officer, and a Chase Distinguished Research Assistant. |

Prof. Bob Bayer, director of the Lobster
Institute at UMaine, was interviewed on Wednesday for the
New York Times blog "The Moment". He discussed
issues related to the best ways to cook lobsters and
whether lobsters feel pain. |

Thursday's Bangor Daily News includes a
story about UMaine student Max Ludwig, who is in Las
Vegas to compete in the World Championship No-Limit Texas
Hold 'em Tournament, which is part of the World Series of
Poker. Ludwig, 22 years old from South Portland, is a New
Media major and a member of the UMaine track team.

Sheridan Kelly, a UMaine New Media
graduate and instructor, will be a guest on the July 5
and 6 broadcast of
Back to Business on WABI (910 AM) and WVOM (103.9 FM)
radio. Kelly is one of the guests who sill
discuss filmmaking in Maine. Deb Neuman, director of
UMaine's Target Technology Incubator, hosts Back to
