Belfast Conference to Explore Nuclear Proliferation Pathways
More than 20 international experts will be in Belfast Thursday July 17 and Friday July 18 to participate in a conference examining the factors that could lead to the spread of nuclear weapons in various hot spots around the world. The University of Maine's School of Policy and International Affairs (SPIA) and the Naval Postgraduate School will host the conference, "Tomorrow's Proliferation Pathways: Weak States, Rogues and Non-States" at UMaine's Hutchinson Center. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Advanced Systems Concepts Office is the conference sponsor. Sessions are scheduled for 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. A conference agenda is online here. Sarah McPartland-Good Named to Foundation Post
Amos Orcutt, president/CEO of the University of Maine Foundation, has announced the promotion of Sarah McPartland-Good to director of planned giving. She will have the primary responsibility of developing and coordinating the Foundation’s comprehensive gift planning program. McPartland-Good, who is an attorney, joined the Foundation in 1998 as a planned giving officer after working in the private practice of law in Bangor. She earned a communications degree from the University of Southern Maine and a law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center. "The Foundation’s future looks very bright because of its incredible level of donor service, stewardship and accountability and I look forward to working with our many alumni and friends to create even more opportunities for students," McPartland-Good said. Grad Student Poster Wins Award
Julie-Ann Scott's Poster entitled "Subversive Bodies' Extraordinary Stories: A Performance of Identity Analysis of Physically Disabled Professionals Personal Narratives" received an award for the top poster at the Society for Disability Studies (SDS)annual conference in New York City. SDS is an international conference drawing disability studies scholars from around the world. Research featured in the poster reception included scholars from across different fields and ranged from graduate students to faculty members. Julie-Ann Scott is a UMaine IPhD student who is also the Graduate Center Coordinator, the Graduate Student Government Grants Officer, and a Chase Distinguished Research Assistant.

Kersbergen in Organic Grain Story
 Comments from Rick Kersbergen of the UMaine Cooperative Extension faculty are included in a Portland Press Herald story about the increasing number of Maine farmers who are growing organic grain. The story is online at the Red Orbit Web site.

Governor Notes UMaine Composites R&D
 Wednesday's Bangor Daily News includes a Capitol News Service story about new rankings in the Milliken Institute's State Technology and Science Index. In the story , Gov. Baldacci points to UMaine composites R&D as one of the factors that has led to improvement in Maine's rankings relative to technology transfer and business development.

Channel 5 to Interview Museum Director
 Channel 5 (WABI) will interview George Kinghorn, the new director of the University of Maine Museum of Art, on Wednesday morning for a story about his plans for the downtown Bangor museum. Kinghorn arrived last month from Jacksonville, Fla. A May news release announcing his appointment is online here.
