Maryann Hartman Awards

1999 Award Winners
Honoring three Maine women

Donna Loring

Loring, from Richmond, has spent over twenty years working and advocating for Maine Indian communities. She serves as the Penobscot Nation's representative to the Maine State Legislature and as the Coordinator of Tribal, State, and International Relations. In March, 1999 she was commissioned as Aide de Camp by Governor King--the second woman to hold the position. A Vietnam War Veteran, she chairs the Legislature's Advisory Commission on Women Veterans. She is a member of ALANA, a grassroots organization that works to enhance opportunities for people of color in Maine, and a member of the University System's Diversity Steering Committee. She is also involved in creating economic development opportunities for Maine people of color through ALANA collaborations with Vietnam and South Africa.

Glenna Smith

Born in Ashland, Smith taught at the Presque Isle High School where she always encouraged students to trust in their own creativity. Smith became published only after age 65. Her plays have achieved New England recognition; her poetry has appeared in Maine Speaks; and her column, "The Old Country Woman," regularly appears in Echoes, a northern Maine journal. She teaches life-writing skills through the local Elderhostel program. She has also been a board member of the Aroostook Agency on Aging and helped to organize the Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE) program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. In 1999, she received an honorary degree from UMPI and an Exemplary Older Person Award from the Maine Department of Human Services.

Esperanza Stancioff

Stancioff, of Camden, is a water quality biologist and the director of the Clean Water Program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. A proponent of statewide environmental stewardship and marine education, she was the catalyst for a program of unprecedented grassroots citizen involvement in pollution monitoring and prevention. She oversaw the organizational and technical development of water quality, phytoplankton and marine habitat programs in northern New England. In addition, she has authored and produced numerous documentaries, field guides, and training materials to promote understanding and concern for the marine environment.
