This Juried High School Competition is co-sponsored by the Maine Wastewater Control Association, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental and Watershed Research.
This is a combined competition for the Maine Water Conference High School Prize and the Maine Stockholm Junior Water Prize. The winner will move forward to represent Maine in the regional competition for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The Call for Abstracts for the high school competition is closed. Guidelines for those invited to present at the Conference are outlined below.
PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
Presentations must include a poster and written report. Requirements for the Juried High School Competition are as follows:
- Poster requirements:
Maximum size: 4ft x 3ft (landscape).
Posters do not need to be mounted. Push pins are provided.
- Report requirements:
Five copies of the report (one copy for each judge, and a copy to be displayed on the easel with the poster) should be brought to the Conference. The report should be single-sided and typed in 12 point font with 1" margins. The complete report should not exceed 6 pages. Page one should be a title page and must include your report title and your name(s). The following pages should provide the details of your project including the following sections: introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, references.
An Adobe Acrobat document which provides some useful advice on how to design successful poster presentations is available for download. There is also a booklet available in pdf format from The Oceanography Society that also provides some useful tips on successful poster design.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Presentations will be judged on the following criteria:
- Clarity of scientific concept/hypothesis.
- Visual and written organization of the presentations.
- Clarity of expression.
- Understanding of project and results.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
Students submitting posters to the 2006 Maine Water Conference are entitled to a discounted registration fee of $20. Please note that due to space limitations, admission is limited to two students per poster submission. Please go to the Registration page for additional information on registration procedures.
