*** Sustainability Solutions Session

This year's Maine Water Conference will include a special
session that introduces Maine's Sustainability Solutions
Initiative, a state-wide collaboration that strives to
address the emerging challenge of how to meet human needs
while sustaining the plant's life support system. SSI
aims to address this challenge in new ways that benefit
Maine and other regions. Launched with a 5-year, $20
million grant from the National Science Foundation in
2009, SSI conducts and supports innovative research that
engages diverse collaborators in developing new solutions
to our most pressing challenges in sustainability. This
session will feature representative talks from SSI's
portfolio of research projects.

NSF Communicating Science Workshop

National Science Foundation
Communicating Science Workshop
April 14-15, 2011
Wells Conference Center, UMaine, Orono

Registration will begin February 1, 2011 through the Maine
EPSCoR website. There is no registration fee for this event.

The NSF Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA)
has developed an interactive workshop that targets the
effective communication of advances in research and
education in science and engineering taking place throughout
the EPSCoR community.

Although traditional scientific training typically does
not prepare scientists and engineers to be effective public
communicators, researchers are increasingly called upon to
share their results with the public. This workshop will
strengthen participantsÕ ability to communicate more
effectively with non-technical audiences. It will help
participants to develop messages, define their audience,
and identify opportunities to engage the media and the
public. Sessions will also include training in on-camera
interviewing, camera usage, making public presentations,
and the use of new media.

Spring Sustainability/Environmental Seminars

A comprehensive listing of sustainability/environmental
seminars taking place at UMaine for spring semester is
located here.

Please contact the sponsoring department if you have
questions or need additional information about these
seminars. Contact Kim Raymond if you are hosting seminars
that you would like included on the list.
