2009 MAINE WATER CONFERENCE POSTER AWARDS
Thank you to all who attended and participated in the 2009 Maine Water Conference. Comments regarding the 2009 conference are welcome as are suggestions for session topics for the 2010 conference. Please forward these to Ruth Hallsworth at hallsworth@maine.edu.
We would also like to thank all the students who participated in our juried poster competitions. Posters were judged in three categories: graduate, undergraduate and high school. Congratulations to the following students who were awarded first place:

Topic: Politics and the Evolution of Environmental Regulations in Maine
Harold Pachios' expertise has had a positive and lasting impact on Maine’s environment, about which he cares deeply. His post-law school career began with work as Associate White House Press Secretary during the Johnson administration. After filling several important roles in Washington, he returned to Maine in 1969 and began practicing law in Portland. He was instrumental in developing Maine’s landmark site location and coastal pollution laws, and he has taught environmental law at Bowdoin. His advocacy related to environmental issues has been significant and impressive.

WRRI GRANT PROGRAM UPDATES
We received an outstanding group of proposals for our WRRI Student Summer Research Program. These awards of up to $5000 will provide funding for student water resource projects taking place this summer. Awards will be announced on April 11th.
The Request for Proposals for the FY2010 Maine-USGS Water Research Resources Institute grant program will be available in the next month. This request will include pre-proposals for research and information transfer projects in the areas of water resources and related environmental sciences. Research proposals for projects up to 12 months in duration will be considered to occur in a project period of March 1, 2010 through February 28, 2011. Please note that no-cost extensions will not be available for FY2010 funded projects.
