As the Principal Investigator, the Provost provides leadership to the project while advocating for ADVANCE goals at every level of the community and the University of Maine System.


Amy Fried

ADVANCE Policy Advocate
As the ADVANCE Policy Advocate, Amy has been leading efforts with Human Resources and the UMaine System to formalize, expand, and implement work-life balance policies. In addition, the policy advocate has spearheaded a collaboration with HR to develop new informational materials that describe the family friendly policies that support faculty recruitment and retention at UMaine.


 Susan K. Gardner

Co-PI and ADVANCE Research Team Leader

Susan directs ADVANCE related research on our campus to ensure that Rising Tide initiatives address the unique issues that affect faculty recruitment, retention and satisfaction at the University of Maine. This research, which has facilitated development of an enhanced understanding of the climate at UMaine, has also resulted in a number of peer-reviewed publications used to disseminate the findings.


Eleanor Groden
Professor of Entomology, Co-PI and Chair, Grants Committee

The ADVANCE Professional Grants Program is designed to provide critical support to UM faculty to facilitate recruitment and retention, particularly of women in academic sciences. Annual grant awards may be used for a variety of purposes including travel for eligible faculty to establish new collaborations or to conduct research, funding to pay for training and professional development opportunities, and money to support the purchase of equipment or in support of summer research programs. To date, the Rising Tide Center has awarded more than $200,000 in grants to UM faculty.


Karen J. Horton                 
Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology
Co-PI and Peer Trainer
Karen works proactively with departments that require assistance in creating positive environments for women faculty. Current initiatives include development of a student professionalism in the classroom program, which was piloted in the School of Forest Resources and the College of Engineering.
