May 14, 2013 – SAVE THE DATE! Advancing Women in Academia: 2nd Annual Networking Conference. Attend this day-long event aimed at connecting women faculty from higher education institutions across Maine. The schedule features keynote speaker Dr. Jaime Lester of George Mason University, and a poster session that supports informal discussion of research and scholarly projects. Afternoon workshops will focus on topics relevant to women striving to succeed in academia.
Participants will include faculty from each of the UMS campuses, Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin colleges, the University of New England, Husson University, and Maine’s community colleges. June 19 – 21, 2013 – One of the most pressing issues in the disciplines of natural resources and the environment is the development of the future workforce and leaders who can prepare a diverse population to deal with pressing natural resources and environmental issues. This national conference will be held June 19-21, 2013, on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va. The goal is to have national leaders share their thoughts and recommendations for increasing diversity in these fields and to offer workshops that highlight best practices in increasing diversity in these disciplines across the nation. May 22, 2013 – Dept. Chair & Unit Director Workshop. This module was developed by experienced faculty in an effort to support colleagues who serve, or will serve, in administrative roles. Morning activities will be geared to new or incoming chairs, while the afternoon discussion will include sharing of expertise from experienced administrators and resource personnel from HR, EAP and Equal Opportunity. Lunch will be provided at noon for those who attend the morning or afternoon sessions, or those who join us for the entire day.

Nov 8, 2012 – Connecting Scholarly Work to Public Dialogue. Join Professor Theda Skocpol, Victor S. Thompson Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University and Director of the Scholars Strategy Network, for a discussion focused on connecting scholarly work to community dialogue. Findings from academic inquiries, which often receive little broader public attention, can be integrated into wider discussion and applied to inform public dialogue and policy making. Manage your communications to identify, protect, and maximize time for research and writing. Join us to share successes, challenges, and strategies for success in the critical arena of academic life.
Sept 13 – Oct 4 (Thursdays) OR Oct 10 – 31 (Wednesdays) – Mindful U: Stress Reduction for the UMaine Community. The Mindful U program is a four-week exploration of stress, and strategies for reducing stress. Learn techniques that are scientifically correlated with improved well-being, increased health, and enhanced work productivity. Classes, which will meet once a week for one and one half hours, are free.
Session 1 (Thursdays) will meet from 11 am – 12:30 pm; Session 2 (Wednesdays) will meet from 3 - 4:30 pm.

April 12, 2012 – Distinguished Climate Scholar Series with Dr. Kathleen Morrison, Professor or Anthropology and Director of the Center for International Studies at the University of Chicago. Dr. Morrison’s work focuses on agricultural transformation, human settlement, and cultural and environmental change of the last 3,000 years in India.

November 14, 2011 – Environmental Anthropology Lecture Series with Dr. Flora Lu. A Stanford Distinguished Alumni Scholar, Dr. Lu is an Associate Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at UC Santa Cruz. Her work in the Amazon, which is focused on the interrelationships between human societies and the natural environment, integrates social and natural science approaches to study resource use and conservation among indigenous peoples and migrant populations in Ecuador.

October 24, 2011 – Distinguished Climate Scholars Series with Dr. Catherine O’Reilly, Assistant Professor of Geography and Geology at Illinois State University, and co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. O’Reilly will highlight her studies of the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems.

October 17 & 18, 2011 – Staples Lectureship in Biochemistry featuring Dr. Melanie H. Cobb, member of the National Academy of Sciences and Fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Cobb currently serves as the Jane and Bill Browning endowed Chair in Medical Science in the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Pharmacology department. Her research is focused on the pathways and mechanisms of signal transduction as she seeks to enhance understanding of the regulation, functions and structural properties of protein kinase cascades.
