Alcohol Information

Alcohol is generally classified as a central nervous system (CNS)-depressant drug. It affects cell membranes, all neurochemical systems, and all endocrine systems. Moderate alcohol use can be safe, but as the following list of effects shows, long-term or heavy use can be problematic or dangerous.

  • What are the facts concerning alcohol and college students?  What are some of the inherent dangers?  How do I calculate my Blood Alcohol Level, and what does that mean?  Where can I find help?

  • Alcohol interferes with absorption of essential nutrients, storage or metabolism of the essential nutrients. Ethanol may also suppress appetite and consumption of food. Taste and smelling senses may be dulled. In some instances alcohol triggers over-eating. Their is a higher likelihood of making poor food choices. Bowel distension and diarrhea are common GIT affects.

Facts derived from Maisto, Galizio, & Connors, Drug Use and Misuse, 1991. Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, Inc., Fort Worth.
