Campus Arboretum Projects
Campus Tree Inventory
In
order to manage and use the
University of Maine Campus Arboretum, it is important to know what trees
are growing on campus and their condition. Over this summer, the Campus
Arboretum and Beautification Committee is building upon previous campus
tree inventories. Michelle McCammon, an undergraduate Horticulture
major
at UMaine, has a Summer Internship to collect and record information,
such as scientific and cultivar names, stem height and diameter, canopy
size and condition, root conditions, age (if known), plus general
condition of roots, bark, and foliage. In addition, she is determining
spatial position relative to the nearest building, GIS location, and
labeling trees. This information will be useful for maintenance, study,
and enjoyment of this rich botanical and horticultural resource on the
UMaine campus.
