Studio Art
B.A.
Degree
The Department of Art offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art.
This program represents a strong commitment to the study of the visual
arts within a liberal arts tradition. The emphasis of the art program is
the study of creative studio production in the areas of drawing,
printmaking, painting, sculpture, and computer art. Students begin their
study in the foundation courses in two- and three-dimensional design and
drawing. While courses in all studio areas are required, upper division
electives allow for advanced specialization in a single area. Elective
credits are occasionally available in
photography and graphic design. Knowledge of art history is seen as
necessary to intelligent studio development, as is an understanding of
the attitudes, philosophies and language of the contemporary art world.
It is also possible to
complete the requirements for art teacher certification while earning
the B.A. degree in Studio Art. The studio degree can lead to specialized
work as an artist in one of the fine arts areas, graduate study in art
or related fields, and art careers in applied art such as graphic design
and digital imaging/multi-media. It should be noted that the specific
orientation of these programs is in fine rather than applied arts.
