The Department
of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Molecular Biology at the University
of Maine presents opportunities of study in the areas of Biochemistry,
Microbiology, and Molecular
and Cellular Biology. Few fields offer the excitement, challenges
and reward as these disciplines. They are the core of modern biology
and the foundation of the rapidly growing fields of genetic engineering
and biotechnology. Advances in these fields are revolutionizing
science and our lives.
In addition,
the Department participates in a state-wide Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) Ph.D. program, with cooperating faculty
at The Jackson Laboratory, the
Maine Medical Sciences Research
Institute, the Foundation for
Blood Research, the University
of Southern Maine and others to offer graduate students expanded research
and educational opportunities.
New Addition to Hitchner Hall
The
department is excited about the extensive new addition and renovations
made to Hitchner Hall (pictured below) which were completed in the
fall of 2002.

The
new 50,000 square foot addition to Hitchner Hall provided an
additional 15 research and teaching laboratories with accompanying
office space for faculty, graduate students, undergraduates alike.
There was also $4 million in renovations
made in the 1950's and 1930's
wings of Hitchner Hall. Students at UMaine are currently working and taking
laboratory courses in some of the most modern laboratory facilities
in the Northeast.
