The Staples Lecture and Seminar Series in Biochemistry: The generous donation of alumnus Basil Staples has enabled the Department of Molecular and Biological Sciences to create the Staples Lecture and Seminar Series. The intent of this endowment is to bring distinguished biochemists and molecular biologists to Maine for seminars and informal discussions with our students and faculty. Staples Distinguished Lecturers usually are in residence for several days to one week to present two or three research seminars and a public lecture on the visitor's science at a level appropriate for a more general audience. Some of our past Staples Lecturers have taken this opportunity to discuss a topic of particular social or educational importance in which they have been involved. Past Staples Lecturers include: Drs. Paul Berg*, Thomas R. Cech*, Philip Cohen, Nicholas R. Cozzarelli, Leroy E. Hood, Hugh Huxley, Stuart Kornfeld, Harvey F. Lodish, Tom Maniatis, and Maxine Singer.  The Staples Seminar Series brings prestigious scientists to the University of Maine to present a single research seminar. Past Staples Seminar Speakers include: Drs. Linda Birnbaum, Bob Buchanan, Peter Devreotes, Nina Fedoroff, Arthur Lesk, Ralph Quatrano, Joan Ruderman, and Robert Wells. Staples Alumni Series. Staples Seminars have also enabled current undergraduate and graduate students to hear seminars by and meet with successful alumni of the Department. These Staples Alumni include: Drs. Howard Fields and Phil Hinds.
