Hank Schmelzer was President of the Maine Community Foundation (MCF) in Ellsworth from 2002 to 2009. With $250 million in assets, MCF is one of the leading charitable resources for donors seeking to provide long-term support to strengthen Maine communities. From 1972 to 1998 Hank was a financial services lawyer and executive in Boston, serving as Vice President and Counsel of New England Mutual Life Insurance Company and retiring in 1998 as president and CEO of the New England Funds, an $8 billion mutual fund group which he helped to launch. He is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Hank is a former U.S. Army Captain, having served in Vietnam and is a recipient of the Bronze Star with an oak leaf cluster. He earned a BA in History and Political Science from UMaine in 1965 and earned a JD from George Washington University School of Law in 1968. He served as a fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government in 1999. Hank currently is a member of the Charles F. Allen Society, Stillwater Society, Board of Visitors, and the Margaret Chase Smith Center Advisory Board. He also is Vice President and Class Agent for the Class of 1965. Hank is a former chair of the UMAA Board of Directors, and served as a member of the UMaine Museum Advisory Board, President’s Development Council and Boston Area Alumni Chapter which he chaired. He also formerly served as Vice Chair for the UMaine Capital Campaign from 1991 to 1996. Hank received the President’s Stillwater Society Award in 2009, the Pine Tree Emblem Award in 1988 and the Block ‘M’ Award in 1979.
