  • Erin McKenzie, jr accounting major and only the 2nd Truman Scholar in the history of UM
  • Junior James Daniels won $10,000 prize in USM’s Business Plan Competition and an ad-ditional $15,000 in consulting fees
  • Graduate student Ana Zivanovic, born in Serbia, lived for years in Madrid and the first graduate of our sustainability concentration; JuiChe Chen, Taiwan; and Monica Angelova, Bulgaria
  • Graduate students on international field trips to Belgium, Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Japan,the Amazon Basin, Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom.
  • The University of Maine chapter of the American Marketing Association hosted “You Can Get There From Here!: The Second Annual Collegiate Business Conference”. The statewide business conference was open to all Maine students, and over 200 attended the day long sessions. Featured speakers included the keynote speaker, Robin Sawyer, Fairchild Semiconductor’s corporate controller and other speakers included Dick Gleason, president of Gleason Media, Meredith Burgess of Burgess Advertising, Kevin Coffin of Prime Financial, and University of Maine business professors, Paul Myer, Omar Khan and Harold Daniel.
  • Each year, there are over 150,000 candidates from 172 countries that are enrolled in the Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) Program. The Economist recently referred to the CFA Program as the “gold standard among investment designations.” Globally the pass rate for the December exam was only 39%. Two of our students, Anh Do and Violeta Zaneva passed this exam on their first attempt.

Faculty Facts

  • Robert Strong, the Carnegie Professor of the Year for the State of Maine
  • Dave Barrett continues to serve (pro-bono) at the Secretary for the Bangor Half-Way House
  • Richard Borgman and Bob Strong (finance faculty in case you forgot) are quietly providing assistance to the state on issues of finance and budgeting.
  • Steve Colburn (Accounting) has once again provided the services of our student accountants to individuals in the area who need accounting assistance at no cost—VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). This is one of those unheralded activities that we engage in that is quite valuable to the community.
  • Lecturer of Management Information Systems, Matt Graham has been invited to speak at an upcoming conference in India this coming October about his research in Web 2.0 technologies and classroom engagement.
  • Nory Jones (MIS) and MBA Program Director is working with MBA students on a marketing research project for Moosehead Furniture and working with the MBS Corps.
  • Omar Khan (marketing) is the advisor for our chapter of the American Marketing Association—and they sponsored a terrific conference in the Fall here on campus. Dr. Khan is also becoming a noted poet in the area and has presented his poetry in several venues in the Bangor area.
  • Paul Myer (marketing, management and general jack of all trades) is involved in numerous activities throughout the state with student teams rendering consulting and advising to a number of organizations.
  • Terry Porter (management) has created a student sustainability group and it is up and running and is engaging in a variety of activities. Terry is also involved with the Mitchell Center on Environmental Resources and with the School of Engineering on several major research initiatives.
  • Bob Strong was selected as the 2007 Maine Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Edu-cation (CASE.) Established in 1981, the Professor of the Year award is the only national pro-gram that recognizes undergraduate professors for outstanding commitment to their students, educational institutions, profession and communities. Senator Susan Collins personally congratulated Bob on this award. He was also named to the Investment Advisory Committee of the Maine State Retirement System. This is an $11 billion fund supporting the re-tirement funds of state employees, public school teachers, employees of municipalities, legislators and judges.  The investment advisory ommittee supervises the actual investment of the fund assets.
  • Gloria Vollmers continues her association with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra as a violinist and in aiding the management of the Orchestra over time
  • John Mahon (Dean) has been appointed Chair of the Governor’s Committee on International Relations Planning.
  • Nancy Forster-Holt, who is working on a Ph.D, runs her own business and teaches at MBS has been singularly honored. The Institute of Management Accountants has elected Nancy to the Small Business and Regulatory Affairs Committee.
