John F. Mahon is Professor of Management and the John M. Murphy Chair of International Business Policy and Strategy at the Maine Business School, University of Maine and Dean, College of Business Public Policy and Health.  He was the founding director of the School of Policy and International Affairs at UM.  From 2004 to 2006, he served as Provost ad interim.  Prior to his appointment at Maine, Professor Mahon was a pro-fesssor of strategy and policy and chair of the Strategy and Policy Department at the School of Management at Boston University.  He received his D.B.A. from Boston University, his M.B.A. (with honors) from Bryant College, and his B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  He is the author or co-author of over 120 papers and book chapters published in such journals as the Academy of Management Review, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Business in the Contemporary World, Business &Society, Business Horizons, California Management Review, Case Research Journal, Corporate Public Affairs, International Journal of Value Based Management, Industrial Crisis Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary Business, Journal of Small Business Management, Global Focus, Long Range Planning, Management Science Review, Public Affairs Review, and the Strategic Management Journal.  His work has appeared in the Handbook of Business Strategy and The Portable MBA in Strategy.  He is also the co-author of an introductory text in management, and the author or co-author of over 85 cases in strategy, general management, and public policy/public affairs. Professor Mahon's research and teaching interests focus on four specific areas: (1) how organizations shape and influence public policy and combat interest groups; (2) how organizations plan and execute strategy in negotiated environments; (3) how organizations use reputation for profit and to blunt public policy and interest group initiatives; and (4) how organizations anticipate and respond to organizational crises. 

Professor Mahon received the Issue Management Council's first-ever award given to an academic for the impact his research and executive education has had on the discipline and practice of issues management.  He and his colleagues won an "Outstanding Achievement in Leadership Preparation by Colleges and Universities" award from the American Association of School Administrators for the Boston Leadership Academy – a program for principals of public schools at all levels in the city of Boston.  It was one of only two awards given nationally. 

Professor Mahon has also won numerous awards for his teaching excellence at the local and national level.  He was the first co-recipient of the General Electric Corporation Award for leadership in management curriculum reform and was recognized by Prentice-Hall for teaching excellence at the National Meetings of the Academy of Management in San Francisco.

Professor Mahon has taught in a variety of executive education programs in university settings, and has served as an executive educator and/or consultant for a variety of Fortune 500 firms, including, but not limited to, All China Federation of Industry and Commerce (Beijing, China), BellSouth Corporation, BHP (Australia), Cardinal Health, Ciba-Geigy, Daewoo (Korea), Digital Equipment Corp., Honeywell International, Jones and Laughlin Steel, Motorola Corporation, New England Telephone, NYNEX, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals (Japan), Pillsbury Corporation, Sanyo Corporation (Japan), Southwestern Bell, Telstra (Australia), and the Travelers.  In the same capacity, he has served organizations in the public sector; trade associations; and government agencies at the local, state and federal level. 

Professor Mahon also chaired the Social Issues in Management Division of the National Academy of Management and was president (and co-founder) of the International Association for Business and Society. He was the Editor of Bus-iness and Society (2004 - 2007) and serves on the editorial boards of Alliance, Case Research Journal, and the International Journal of Public Affairs.  He has been noted in Lexington's Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry Who's Who Among America's Teachers (multiple times); International Who's Who of Professionals; Who's Who in the World; and Who's Who in American Education.

He resides in Hampden, Maine with his wife, Julie, and Tim the wonder beagle.
