Student Organizations

Business School studentsThe Maine Business School sponsors several organizations that provide students with opportunities to interact informally with faculty, business leaders, and other students, while learning more about selected areas of business.  While these organizations do have a focus within selected disciplines, students from all disciplines are welcome in each.

Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi)

The Omega Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi is UMaine's only active professional business fraternity. The members of Alpha Kappa Psi gain real first hand business experience that you cannot obtain in a classroom. Currently, AKPsi has over 230,000 brothers around the globe and is growing. The Omega Pi chapter focuses on various professional events throughout the school year such as attending conferences, etiquette dinners, and hosting professional speakers from the business world. AKPsi also conducts fundraising, social, and philanthropy events to shape its members into well rounded business professionals and citizens. This organization is open to UMaine students of all majors and is always looking for eager, motivated individuals to join the team. If you're interested in finding out more about AKPsi, feel free to contact our academic advisor, David Barrett, via First Class.

American Marketing Association (AMA)

The UMaine AMA sponsors speakers and activities related to all aspects of Marketing. The UMaine AMA is open to all students, regardless of major, and offers excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)

The University of Maine Student Chapter of the IMA is a student-run organization devoted to promoting the accounting profession and the wide variety of career opportunities within the field. Community service events and social functions are also integral parts of our mission. The student chapter maintains relationships with the local Bangor-Waterville Chapter of the IMA, which is part of the national organization. For information contact Dave Barrett.

Business School students$PIFFY

$PIFFY is a student-run investment group where members gain first-hand experience managing a "real-money" mutual fund. $PIFFY encourages ALL STUDENTS to join us anytime throughout the school year at one of the meetings. This club applies to all majors because everyone wants to learn how to make and manage money in the market!

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Students gain hands-on experience preparing federal and state income tax returns through the VITA program sponsored by the IRS. Volunteers prepare income tax returns for students and low income tax payers. Volunteers are able to put into practice what they have learned in their tax courses and from IRS training materials. This program provides a direct benefit to local taxpayers. It is also a great resume builder for accounting students. For information contact Professor Steven Colburn at Steve_Colburn@umit.maine.edu.
