Campus Life - Athletics
UMaine is the state’s only Division I school (visit the Black Bear sports website to find out why), so athletics are kind of a big deal here. And by “kind of a big deal,” what we’re really saying is it’s perfectly normal to scream your face off while watching hockey with 5,000 of your closest friends at Alfond Arena.
But Black Bear pride goes way beyond hockey. It’s about singing along to the “Maine Stein Song” — without messing up the words — whether Maine scores on the ice, on the court, on the trails, on the diamond or on the field. It’s about meeting up with friends to shoot hoops — or play one of dozens of club and intramural sports — at the New Balance Student Recreation and Fitness Center. It’s about driving to Connecticut in a snowstorm for a basketball tournament or cheering on the cross-country team on a chilly autumn afternoon in Orono.
Once you go blue, you become part of a tradition of academic and athletic excellence that dates back to 1865 — a legacy that is stronger than ever today.
So go ahead, scream your face off. Spirit happens here.
