Facilities and Amenities
Programs, Services, and Staff
Family and Youth

Facilities and Amenities:
Access
F: Please consider installing a pedestrian sidewalk in the grassy/Tree area by the parking lot. Walkers can only walk in the streets and I’ve witnessed a few near misses.
R: Thank you for the suggestion, we will look into it for a future fiscal year.
F: Handicap parking for van access.
R: We have a row of handicap-accessible parking spots along the treeline next to Hilltop Road, several of which have a striped area next to them for van lift use. To increase their visibility, we have added temporary sign easels in front of each handicap-accessible spot.

F: Is is possible to get someone to sweep off the dirt that is at the top of the sidewalk at the Emergency station post? Also would be nice if UM swept dirt and rocks off all of the concrete circular islands that separate the parking lanes in the lot. Someday UM should find a fix to that top of sidewalk area where water and junk just flows and collects there making it a messy walk for members coming going up and down. thanks.
R: Great ideas, thanks. The curb-cut you refer to was placed poorly, and is being moved this summer to fix the runoff problem. We will address the sand issue as part of our spring cleanup activities.

Weight Scales

F: Would it be possible to get a weigh scale somewhere in the building to use (like Latti used to have)? I know that the one in the men's locker room is busted due to water so maybe we could have one general one in the circuit area.
R: New scales have been purchased and are in located in both the selectorized weight area and the plate-loaded weight area.

F: The new weight scales are not user friendly. These are scales used by nurses and doctors in offices. Why did you not get digital scales?
R: The previous digital scale that we had in the men's locker room was destroyed by water damage, so we ordered new scales that would be more resistant to water damage. Due to your feedback, we will be moving the two remaining digital scales to the weight areas, and putting the new scales into the locker rooms.

Locker Rooms and Bathrooms
F: Please mop the locker room floor more often.
R: We clean the locker rooms twice per day based on staffing availability, and they are checked througout the day as well. We will be sure to verify that our employees are doing this as scheduled.
F: Put a dirty towel bag in the locker room.
R: We have placed a dirty towel bag just outside the locker rooms. Please remember to only place SMALL towels in them; if you return your large towel there you will be charged a fee because we will not know you have returned it.
F: Hair/Hand dryers in the locker rooms; it would be healtier vs going outside w/ wet hair (+ unsightly!).
R: There are hand/hair dryers in each locker room, in the long aisle.

F: You should add more lockers (and/or locker rooms) so I can rent one.
R: The size of our locker rooms was dictated by recommendations from a professional consulting firm. It is unfortunate that the firm underestimated the demand for lockers at this facility and price. Lockers expire at the end of May, August, and December... so watch for notices and show up (or call) early on the first day if you want to get one!

F: The lock on family changing room needs to be changed. It doesn't unlock when you open it from the inside, so the next person in line can't get in once the door closes and the manager has to come unlock it.
R: That lock is due to be replaced, it's just a matter of scheduling with the contractor at this point.

F: I think it’s crazy that the locker room is closed while the rec. center is open – for cleaning. People should be able to get in and out of there at all times while the rec. center is open. Why can’t it be cleaned while the rec. center is closed (night?).
R: All the locker rooms, as well as the rest of the building, are cleaned at night as well as once during the day. Only two of our maintenance employees are female, and in order to clean the locker rooms quickly we need to utilize a team of several people. Since this team needs to include men, the locker room must be closed for the duration. Help us find more women to work on our maintenance staff! (UPDATE 5/1/08: We currently have enough female maintenance workers to allow the locker/bath rooms to remain open during cleaning.)

F: It is hard to plan around the posted bathroom closings when they are so loosely adhered to. I have a very busy schedule and delayed coming today until 2:30 thinking that the locker room would certainly be open. It had not even been cleaned yet – it was 2:33. I realize you have a lack of female cleaning staff, but if the posted times are not accurate, it would be more fair to randomly clean the locker rooms, as then it could just be blamed on bad luck. Thanks for your time!
R: We will work with our building managers and maintenance staff to get this back on schedule. (UPDATE 5/1/08: We currently have enough female maintenance workers to allow the locker/bath rooms to remain open during cleaning.)
F: Shower curtains are scummy, need to be cleaned or replaced.
R: We should have done this over winter break, but it was overlooked. It will be taken care of as soon as possible.
F: Thank you for the soap dishes in the showers. They even match the decor.
R: You are quite welcome! Soap dishes were part of the original facility plan, but their delivery was delayed.
F: Hooks on the inside of the restroom stalls would be great!
R: Some of them already have hooks, and the others will be added soon.
Indoor Temperature

F: The locker room could be a bit warmer. I realize people are often hot from working out, but with little or no clothing and being wet, it's cold. It seems like I take hotter showers there because the room is so cold. You may save energy on hot water if you raise the locker room temperature one or two degrees.
R: We are still working the kinks out of the new building, and one of those kinks is air temperature. We raised the temperature in the locker rooms a couple of times and it caused excess humidity. We will continue to attempt to adjust climate controls in all areas to fit everyone's needs within the constraints of the facility.

F: Please Lower the heat upstairs in the cardio area, Thanks.
R: We are still working the kinks out of the new building, and one of those kinks is air temperature. One of the issues is that we run the heat at a certain temperature, but then at some times of the day the sunshine is so strong that it raises the temperature inside the building beyond what we intended. We will continue to attempt to adjust climate controls in all areas to fit everyone's needs within the constraints of the facility.
F: I think you should add ceiling fans for the cardio room!!
R: After the facility is constructed, it is very difficult and expensive to add electrical fixtures. However, we recently turned the heat down in all workout areas.
F: Please find a way to cool down and shade the front row in the cardio area. The area is almost impossible to use when the sun is in the wrong spot. Maybe pull the treadmills back from the windows?
R: We recently turned the heat down in all workout areas. Regarding the shade issue, the facility's design included frosted glass that was supposed to eliminate the need for shades, which do not fit in the architectural design or the budget.
Pool Area
F: I love everything here - the people are A++ especially the instructors for Water Sculpting. But while EVERY area of the facility is very clean, the tiles at the water's edge and in the hot tub are not.
R: We're glad you're enjoying the facility! We will be sure to address the cleaning issue, thank you for bringing it to our attention.

F: PLEASE install a second wave-dampening lane line between the lap area and the rest of the pool. It's very wavy when trying to do laps while aerobics class or other activities are going on in the other part of the pool.
R: A second lane line has been installed.

F: Please put Markers on bottom of “lap” section of pool. Very hard to judge where the end of the pool is when swimming especially if the pool is a bit turbid. Thanks
R: Thank you for your suggestion, we will look into it.
F: A couple pairs of flippers in the pool equipment bin, like the ones at Wallace, would be great.
R: The swim fins at Wallace Pool are owned by the swim team, not by Campus Recreation, but we will look into the possibility of providing them here.

F: I really like the Whirlpool. I really enjoy going here because of it and the running track
R: That's great, we're pleased to hear it!

F: Stronger Whirlpool would be better exercise and more fun.
R: Our vortex pool is adjustable. If it's not strong enough for you, you can ask the lifeguard to turn it up.
F: There should be a handle to help in exiting the vortex (whirlpool), and padding on the end of the walls at the opening to the pool. Children have trouble getting out against the current. Also, the two small nozzles in the vortex protrude and it's easy to jam into them while going around.
R: Thank you for your feedback, we will look into these issues.
F: The Sauna is not hot enough.
R: We will test to ensure that it is operating within the required temperature parameters, but due to health and safety regulations those parameters may be lower than some of our members would prefer.
F: The Hot Tub is more like lukewarm.
R: We will test to ensure that it is operating within the required temperature parameters, but due to health and safety regulations those parameters may be lower than some of our members would prefer.
Track and Courts

F: My coworkers and I enjoy walking at lunch time and used to be able to use the old gym for free. We would love to have the option of walking inside someplace on campus for FREE or a nominal fee. Are we still allowed to walk on the old track?
R: Because of the open concept layout at the rec center, there isn't any way for us to control access to individual parts of the facility. So we can't sell a pass just to walk on the track here. For information about use of the fieldhouse track, please contact the Athletic Department.

F: Could you please designate a specific lane on the track for walking.
Those who are running will no longer have to weave in and out of the lanes. Please Help.
R: Thank you for the suggestion, we have added this instruction to our track direction sign.

F: Regarding the basketball scoreboard and the way too loud buzzer. Please lower the volume. I mean, when we are in cardio and this thing blares and it is loud for us in there, that should tell you how unnecessarily loud it is for people on the first floor, who oftentimes plug their ears before it buzzes. The loudness of it is like what you would find in an auditorium or something. Please consider lowering the volume on this thing. Thank you.
R: We're not sure that's something we can control but we can certainly look into it! If we can't control the volume, we can certainly instruct staff to use a shorter buzz length.

F: How can I make a racquetball reservation online? We have memberships at the Rec Center.
R: Click here for instructions on using WebTrac.

F: The MAC court needs to be washed badly. I play on it 3-4 times per week and it's really slippery with that fine dust out there. People will stop slipping, rolling ankles, etc. I ref like 4 times a week and see people falling all over the place when they try to change direction.
R: Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will take another look at our cleaning schedule.

Weight/Cardio Area and Multipurpose Rooms
F: why do the lights in the cardio area not turn off now that we have bright sunny days? isn't this supposed to be a green building which uses less energy? like today, for example, right now other than a few clouds or two, most of the lights in the cardio area could get turned down/off and we work out in natural light. it is frankly too bright with overhead lighting plus bright western sunlight.thanks.
R: The row of lights furthest from the windows in the cardio/weight areas remains on all the time, but the rest do shut off via sensor during the day.

F: You should get rid of the large gray mattes in the second floor stretching area and put back the single user mattes, they're much better for doing exercise on and don't accumulate as much dirt. You should also replace the original mattes, that fell apart after a few weeks, with the same kind of closed cell foam mattes that are in the old fitness center, they're much better.
R: We have reduced the number of the large gray mats in the stretching by half, and placed a small number of small portable mats behind the free weight rack located against the wall in that alcove.

F: More ab area and mats.
R: We are looking into ways to increase the square footage available for stretching and other mat workouts. Ideas on how to do this are welcome!

F: Please let me use the LeMond spin bikes when there's no class using them. They're so much better than the funky unadjustable bikes on the second floor. If you have them and they're not being used why can't members use them? At every other club and YMCA I've been a member of you can.
R: Our current policy on not allowing access to the LeMond cycles outside of class time is based on two safety-related issues. First and foremost, our multipurpose rooms are difficult for our building managers to monitor easily, and we wouldn't want someone using the cycles to undergo a heart attack (for example) and not be discovered quickly. To a lesser degree, we are also concerned that unsupervised use of the flywheel may result in user injury.

F: Please put more spray bottles around to clean the machines – Also some you don’t have to spray!!
R: Thank you for your suggestion, we will look into it.
F: Please put trash cans by upstairs water fountains so people have a place for their used gum.
R: Thank you for your suggestion, we have done this.
F: Also please put the old Latti sign up asking/reminding the Imbeciles not to spit in the water fountain =)
R: We need to find a balance between putting up too many signs, and not putting up enough. We will look into this one.

F: You should put all the weight equipment on one floor! Please consider putting all the weight equipment on one floor it makes much much more sense.
R: The plate-loaded weight equipment is located on the first floor because it is so heavy and because this is the area where weights are most often dropped onto the floor. Also, to accommodate the comfort levels of all users, equipment most commonly used by advanced users have been separated from that most commonly used by beginner users.

F: Please stop paying people to walk around and look at me. Thanks.
R: Campus Recreation's "Fitness Assistants" are employed for two reasons. First, they are responsible for cleaning all fitness equipment and fitness areas throughout the day. Second, they are available to help people learn how to use the various types of fitness equipment.

F: You need a list of equipment that can be provided to physical Therapists. Reasons for this: Having a recovery program designed.
R: Thank you for the suggestion, we have compiled the list. We do offer Athletic Training services in the Wellness Suite from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, if you would like to make use of this service.
F: I would like to suggest the “Kettle bell” as a new piece of equipment. It’s a more efficient way to strengthen, tone, and sculpt the body.
R: Thank you for the suggestion, we will look into it for next year. Right now we have reached our limit for spending on equipment.
F: Speed bag. If your going to have a heavy bag… why not? Develops good upper body control.
R: Thank you for the suggestion, we will look into it for next year. Right now we have reached our limit for spending on equipment.
F: Straight pull up bar. It is versatile and a part of any gym.
R: Each squat rack and cable crossover machine has pull-up bars attached, for a total of 6 pull-up bars. On each of these, there is a substantial section in the middle that is straight. If you place your hands a little bit closer together, you will acheive the same effects as if you have an all-straight bar.
F: The Elastic bands upstairs are great exercise but there is nothing to hook them to when I want to use them. Just some kind of rigid support with places to put the bands would be great, Thanks
R: Thank you for the suggestion, we will look into it. Meanwhile, you're welcome to be creative. For example, if you kneel, you can use the railing near the stairs or along the 2nd floor walkway.
Programs, Services, and Staff:
F: I have not yet been to the Fitness Center, and I have never been to ANY fitness center in my life! I was curious about receiving assistance in what I should do for a personal fitness program, and the proper use of the available machines. What do you offer? Thanks!
R: For general information about how to use the various machines, you can get a free equipment orientation from our on-duty Fitness Assistant. For personal recommendations, you could either purchase a Fitness Consultation ($15), or a Fitness Assessment ($20) and Personal Training session(s). For detailed explanations and rates, please click here.
F: Please post the fitness classes schedule on the website here that would be very helpful for people to plan. Also, posting the various events on the website (birthday parties, middle school baskbetball games, etc.) would be nice as well so that those of us who would not rather be at the fitness center during these oftentimes loud events where little kids are allowed to run around the center.
R: These events have been listed on our webpage since we opened, but we will make an effort to make them easier to find. But regarding listing each birthday party... unfortunately we are unable to do this because of the frequency and the fact that they happen on different days and at different times each week.

F: Do I need to register for classes, or just show up? (I am uncertain which classes will "fit in" my schedule?
R: All free classes, and all Mind/Body classes, are first-come / first-served. For Cycling classes we have a Cycle Signup notebook at the front counter, which you can put your name in up to 24 hours before each class. Phone reservations are accepted. Only the classes listed as "Instructional" in our Information Guide require registration.

F: Classes for my adult son? What would he pay per visit?
R: Assuming that your adult son is not a member, he would pay $7 for a Daily Guest Pass to enter the facility and then he could attend all free classes while he was here. He could also buy Drop In Passes for Mind/Body ($5 each) or Cycling ($4 each) classes. If he would like to participate in Instructional classes he may do so at the non-member rate.

F: Please Start a Tai chi Class (preferably free) for members in the A.M. (early) every day. Wonderful for balance/Flexibility.
R: We are adding and removing classes from the schedule based on demand and on instructor availability. If a Tai Chi instructor becomes available, and there is enough demand for a morning Tai Chi class, we will add it. (UPDATE 5/1/08: We did recently run a Tai Chi demo class and there was some interest; we will continue to evaluate this idea.)
F: I started taking classes and have been really enjoyed doing it! Since I have to work till 4:30 pm, if you could provide us more cardio classes such as cardio kickboxing and step basics after 5:00pm, that would be wonderful!! I used to take a cardio kick class in Portland and I loved doing it...and now I miss that so much!!
R: We are adding and removing classes from the schedule based on demand. If there is enough demand for more evening classes, we will add them.
F: Please open earlier on Sundays so people can work out before their kids get up.
R: Facility hours are determined based on having enough people using the building to justify the cost in keeping it open. On Sunday mornings the facility is too lightly attended to justify opening earlier.
F: Regarding the suggestion box in the Rec Center: sharpen the suggestion box pencils and get a new suggestion slip holder.
R: We will make sure to check the pencils on a regular basis. We checked the blank suggestion slip holder and while it's not specifically designed to hold them, it is not defective.
F: After Hilary Clinton came to the rec center, it smelled like liberal democrats. Don’t let her come next time. It wouldn’t smell like liberal democrats. Bring in a Republican to classy the place up.
R: Everyone is welcome here, regardless of their political affiliations or anything else.
F: Every time I walk into the Rec. center I smile and say hi to whoever is working at the desk. Unfortunately they are not always quick to smile back, or even say hi. What happened to having the best customer service on campus?
R: Thank you for your feedback, this is a training issue and we will deal with it.

F: Great staff!
R: Thank you!

F: Josh Gallant was very helpful to me today when I asked him for help with machine assistance.
R: That's great to hear, thank you, we'll be sure to pass that along!

Family and Youth:
F: [Please] DEMAND that children NOT be allowed to run in inappropriate areas. Tell your staff to approach parents and instruct them not to run. We members don't appreciate having to dodge mis-managed wild kids.
R: Our staff has been instructed to more closely watch for and correct this behavior, so hopefully you have seen an improvement.

F: Your place is FANTASTIC!! I have one question...I can't find any info on what the summer camps are like for the kids....I want to sign up early but would like to know more info...I.E. staff to student ratio, planned activities etc..Where can I find this?? Thanks!!
R: Our summer camps program and web page is finished and we are accepting registrations. Email Lisa Carter with any further questions.

F: We had a great time in January 19th with a group of students we will return Feb. 20th during school vacation.
R: That's great, we'll see you then!

F: Daycare.
R: We do not hold a daycare facility license.

F: Do you rent parts of the Rec area out to groups? (swimming pool and gym) I'm an 8th grade teacher in Dedham and toured your facility over the weekend. I was very impressed. I was thinking at the end of the year my class of 15 could come there for swimming and perhaps use of one of the courts for 3 hours. Is that something we could discuss? It would be in June (14-18 depending on snow days!)
R: Absolutely! Joanne Arseneault is the contact person for facility rentals. You can reach her via email at the link above or call her at 581-1082.
