Campus Recreation Membership and General Facility Use Policies
MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS AND TYPES
Full Membership - Includes full use of all Campus Recreation facilities during open recreation times. Benefits include:
- Use of all cardio and weight equipment
- Use of racquetball and squash courts (reservations may be needed)
- Participation in open recreation activities including but not limited to pick-up basketball, volleyball, badminton, and indoor soccer
- Use of Wallace Pool
- Use of the leisure pool
- Walking or jogging on the indoor track
- A wide selection of free adult group exercise classes
- Reduced-fee access to Cycling, Mind/Body, and Instructional classes
- Reduced-fee access to programs, special events, and services such as personal training, massage therapy, equipment rental, and Maine Bound trips / courses, races, and other events
- Use of the locker rooms, including locker rental at the SRFC
- Equipment checkout (for basketball, volleyball, racquetball, etc.)
- Free admission for the whole family to Family Sport Nights
- Ability to sponsor facility guests (must be 18+ to sponsor a guest)
- Use of Mahaney Dome during open recreation hours for soccer, field hockey, football, cricket, rugby, etc.
- Recreational climbing during open recreation hours on the climbing wall at the Maine Bound Adventure Center
Wallace Pool Pass - Entitles holder to swim during any open swim times at Wallace Pool, located in the Memorial Gym. No other membership benefits or discounts are given with this pass. Pass holder may access other Campus Recreation programs and services (such as personal training, massage therapy, equipment rental, child/youth camps, and Maine Bound trips and courses) for additional fees.
Climbing Wall Pass - Entitles holder to climb during open recreation times at the climbing tower and bouldering wall located at the Maine Bound Adventure Center. No other membership benefits or discounts are given with this pass. Pass holder may access other Campus Recreation programs and services (such as personal training, massage therapy, equipment rental, child/youth camps, and Maine Bound trips and courses) for additional fees.
Early Bird Facility Pass - Entitles holders to use the SRFC only on Monday - Friday before 10:30am. No other membership benefits are given with this pass. Pass holder may access other Campus Recreation programs and services (such as personal training, massage therapy, equipment rental, child/youth camps, and Maine Bound trips and courses) for additional fees.
Punch Passes:
Entitle the holder to use the SRFC during all hours of operation, as well as the Maine Bound Adventure Center, Mahaney Dome, and Wallace Pool during open recreation hours. Each individual facility use is considered one punch on the pass. Punch passes are transferable and multiple punches may be used at the same time.
Daily Guest Passes:
- Non-members may purchase a Daily Guest Pass for $7.
- For the date of purchase, the Daily Guest Pass entitles the holder to use the SFRC and MBAC during all hours of operation, as well as the Mahaney Dome and the Wallace Pool during open recreation hours.
- Guests may participate in group exercise classes by purchasing a Drop in Pass for the class as well as the Daily Guest Pass for entry into the facility.
- Daily Guest Passes may be purchased at the Member Services or Entry Desk at the SFRC and at the MBAC. Guest Passes are non-transferable and non-refundable.
- Guest must sign the Release and Assumption of Risk (.pdf) prior to using any facility.

- Guests are not eligible to participate in Intramural Sports or Sport Clubs.
- Guests 16 years of age and older may participate without supervision. Children age 15 or younger must be directly supervised in the SRFC and the MBAC by an adult age 18 or older and follow the age requirements for facility use outlined in the use policies listed above for Dependents.
- Guests may check out equipment from the Equipment Issue Desk during their visit. They are financially responsible for any equipment that is lost or damaged, and must agree to pay these charges before equipment will be issued to them.
- Members who sponsor guests are financially responsible for any loss or damage to equipment used by their sponsored guest.
- All paying guests will be issued a Daily Guest Pass Receipt in order to enter the facilities and should retain the pass throughout their stay. It may be used to enter all facilities on the day it is issued.
MEMBERSHIP PERIODS
All memberships are inclusive of University breaks and holidays that fall within that period. Hours of operation are posted on the Campus Recreation website. Please note that hours will be reduced during breaks and holidays.
The membership periods have been revised starting in 2008-2009, to better accomodate UMaine students and employees. Spring 2008 student memberships expired on 5/15/08. Non-student memberships currently set to expire on 5/31/08 will still expire on that date; after that date, the periods below come into effect:

Please note that many of our memberships are prorated by day, in which case the membership start date is the date the membership was purchased, not the start date shown above.
MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY

University of Maine full- and part-time students are automatic full members of Campus Recreation. Memberships are available to all employees, alumni, and retirees of the University of Maine, as well as to local residents.

All members are eligible to sponsor memberships for their spouse/partner and/or dependents.

Membership type and fee is based on an individual’s primary affiliation with the University of Maine. All memberships are subject to proof of affiliation, employment, or enrollment.

- Memberships become effective when payment is received, proof of membership eligibility is confirmed, and a signed Release and Assumption of Risk is received.
- Members may sponsor memberships for spouses, partners, and dependent children.
Full-Time and Part-Time Students (Undergraduate and Graduate):
- Campus Recreation full membership is granted to all enrolled full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate University of Maine students who pay the Recreation Center Fee.
- Individuals must be recognized as a full-time or part-time student as determined by the University of Maine. Contact the Office of Student Records at (207) 581-1290 for information.
- Automatic membership is granted for the enrolled semester only.
- Students who are not enrolled for the current semester may purchase a student-rate membership for the next semester after the last term for which they were enrolled. For example, a student who does not take classes over the summer.
Employees:
- Individuals must be on record at University of Maine Human Resources as current faculty/staff (full-time or part-time). For eligibility questions, call (207) 581-1580.
- Employees’ primary affiliation with the University is employment. If the employee is also taking classes, is an alumnus, or has a spouse/partner who is a student, their employment remains the primary affiliation.
- Employees who do not themselves want to be members may sponsor their spouse/partner and/or dependants for an Employee Individual or Individual Plus membership.
- University of Maine System and other University of Maine System campuses’ employees are eligible to purchase a membership at Employee rates.
Alumni:
- Alumnus must be a member for spouse/partner or dependents to have membership(s) under the Alumni category.
- Individual must have received a bachelor and/or graduate degree from the University of Maine to purchase a membership under this category.
Retirees:
- University of Maine retiree must be a member for spouse/partner or dependents to have membership(s) under this category.
- Individual must have actually retired from the University of Maine.
Local Community Residents:
- Local residents are eligible to purchase a membership and sponsor a membership for their spouse/partner or dependents.
Sponsored Memberships:
Memberships must be purchased by the primary affiliate.
- Spouse and Partner:
Spouse/Partner memberships are intended for spouses and partners as defined by the University of Maine’s health benefits plans.
- Dependents:
Dependent memberships are intended for members’ dependents (aged 4-22 and/or declared dependent children) as defined by the University of Maine health benefits plan. Memberships are not required for dependents aged 0-4. A parent or legal guardian must sign the Release and Assumption of Risk for all dependents under 18 years of age prior to the first use of the facility or programs.
PROGRAMS
Campus Recreation reserves the right to revise, amend, and/or change any published information. Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel courses, to set minimum and maximum sizes for programs, and to make decisions that affect the location and content of its programs. Therefore please check with Campus Recreation for current program information.
Program Eligibility:
- All current members of the SRFC are eligible to participate in departmental programs such as fitness, Maine Bound, family programs, and other events. Registration and payment of additional fees may be required for participation in some programs.
- Non-members may participate in additional-fee programs at the non-member price.
- All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Maine are eligible to participate in the Intramural Sports Program administered by Campus Recreation, providing they have submitted a Release and Assumption of Risk (.pdf) form (click here for .doc version) to the Campus Recreation office.
- All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Maine are eligible to participate in the Sports Club program administered by Campus Recreation providing they have supplied a Sport Club Release of Liability and Assumption of Risk form to the Campus Recreation office.
Program Registration Procedures: To register for Campus Recreation programs and events, call Campus Recreation (207) 581-1082, or visit the Member Services Desk at the SRFC or MBAC. We accept cash, personal checks, and MC/VISA, with full payment due upon registration. Current University of Maine students may select to be billed through the Business Office for Maine Bound programs. Early registration is advised as space is limited.
Program Cancellations/Refunds: Registrants who must cancel from a program or activity should inform Campus Recreation as soon as possible. Registrants who cancel prior to the registration deadline receive a refund minus a $25.00 administrative fee, or the cost of the course, whichever is less. Students who cancel prior to the registration deadline will be billed the administrative fee on their student account. Non- students will be refunded the program fee minus a $25.00 administrative fee. No refunds can be given after the registration deadline. If Campus Recreation cancels a program, full refunds will be given. A check will be issued through the Business Office and mailed to registered participants, or registered participants may choose to have their Campus Recreation account credited instead.
NON-STUDENT MEMBERSHIP PAYMENT / CHANGES / CANCELLATIONS
Payment Methods: Cash, Check, MC/Visa credit and debit cards, and University of Maine payroll deduction.
Changes:
Make changes to your membership information or plan at any time by calling (207) 581-1082 or stopping at the Member Services Desk in the SRFC.
If a member's University of Maine affiliation has changed and they are no longer eligible for membership under their current membership category, the member has two options:
- They may continue their membership at an adjusted rate based on their new status, or
- They may cancel membership and a refund will be prorated based on the paid-but-unused full months of membership.
Cancellation:
- Refunds will be prorated based on the paid-but-unused full months of membership. A $25 administrative fee will apply to all membership cancellations.

GENERAL FACILITY USE
In consideration for other users, please use all Campus Recreation facilities in the manner for which they are intended.
Facility Entry:
To enter any Campus Recreation facility, individuals must present a valid MaineCard, RecCard, or Daily Guest Pass receipt, and must have paid appropriate fees (either as a student, or by purchasing a Campus Recreation membership or pass). If the member carries a Maine Card (with or without funds in their MaineCard account) and would like the option of not carrying that Maine Card while in our facilities, the member may pay $5 to have a photo taken and put on record in our database.
Food and Drinks:
Food and drinks are permitted in lobby and lounge areas only. Please, no glass containers. Water is allowed in activity areas only if it is in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Exceptions to these restrictions include University-catered functions and special events.
Tobacco Use:
Smoking and tobacco products are not permitted in Campus Recreation facilities. Smoking is not permitted within 100 feet of entrances to Campus Recreation facilities.
Alcohol and Other Drugs:
Alcoholic beverages, and illegal and performance enhancing drugs, may not be brought into or used in any Campus Recreation facilities. For safety reasons, individuals may not use Campus Recreation facilities or participate in programs while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Exceptions include alcoholic beverages at University catered functions and special events. For additional information about the Alcohol and Drug policy, click here.
Cell Phones:
For safety and security reasons, the use of cell phones is not recommended in locker rooms, bathrooms, the sauna, and while using fitness equipment. Additionally, the use may be restricted in some specific programs for privacy and safety reasons.
Bicycles, roller skates, rollerblades and skateboards:
For everyone's safety, bicycles, roller skates, rollerblades, and skateboards may not be brought inside Campus Recreation facilities. Exception: Campus Recreation events in designated areas at designated times.
Animals:
Only certified guide or personal assistant animals are permitted in Campus Recreation facilities.
IPODs, MP3 players and other personal music devices:
Please be sure to use headphones when using personal music devices.
Moving Equipment:
For your safety, only Campus Recreation staff may move equipment in Campus Recreation facilities.
Closing Time:
All areas including locker rooms must be vacated by closing time each night. Reminders will be given as the closing time nears. A final announcement will be made when the facility closes. Fifteen minutes prior to closing, all rented and checked-out equipment must be returned to the Equipment Issue Desk, and all day lockers must be emptied.
Facility Closures:
Areas of the SRFC and MBAC may be closed and/or restricted from time to time. Most of these closures and restrictions will be due to special events, classes, cleaning and maintenance, reservations, or inclement weather. Scheduled closures will be posted on the website and at the facility one week in advance whenever possible. Unscheduled or emergency closures will be posted to the Campus Recreation website.
Personal Belongings:
Please place personal belongings in day lockers, or cubbies where available. Unsecured belongings may be considered abandoned property and turned in to lost and found located at the Equipment Issue Desk at the SFRC and the Front Desk at the MBAC. Lost IDs will be turned in to the Membership Desk. Campus Recreation can not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal property.
Attire:
At a minimum, please wear shorts, shirts, and closed-toe athletic shoes in all Campus Recreation facilities, with the exception of the pool and outdoor play fields. Non-marking court shoes must be worn on SRFC basketball and racquetball/squash courts, and in multipurpose rooms. For health/sanitation reasons, bare feet are not allowed anywhere except the locker rooms and pools. Please strongly consider wearing sandals in the pools and locker room areas anytime you are not actually in the water. Please wear appropriate swimwear in the pools, spa, and sauna, and change into suitable attire before using other areas of the SRFC facility.
Photography:
To protect individual privacy, photography and/or videotaping are not allowed unless prior written authorization is obtained from the Director of Campus Recreation or his/her designee.
Open Recreation:
Open recreation hours are available for all members to engage in various recreational activities. Unreserved open recreation activities are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The daily schedule of events is available at the entry desk and on the Campus Recreation website.
Disability Access:
It is the policy and practice of The University of Maine to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the state and local requirements regarding people with disabilities. Under these laws, no qualified individual with a disability shall be denied access to or participation in services, programs, and activities of The University of Maine.
The SFRC is designed to accommodate patrons of varying abilities. Campus Recreation staff are available to provide accommodations to members with disabilities. Members are encouraged to contact Campus Recreation in our facility to help ensure that their request for accommodation is met.
FAMILY POLICIES
Our family policy encourages members and guests to bring children to use the SRFC and MBAC for drop-in recreational use any time these facilities are open. Special family events and family hours are offered in both facilities and many family- and youth-specific programs will be available during the year. A parent or legal guardian must sign a Release and Assumption of Risk for all children under 18 years of age prior to the first use of the facility or programs. (The child's name goes on the top of the first page, and the parent signs on the back. If your signature is difficult to read, please also print your name.)
Special policies related to children are in place. See below.
- Children aged 0-13 must have direct and hands-on parental or parental-approved 18+ year old guardian supervision at all times.
- Children may use the spa when they're tall enough to keep their heads completely out of the water with their feet firmly touching the bottom (not just the bench).
- Age 0-4 years:
For health and safety reasons, children of these ages are not permitted at any time in the weight and cardio areas, the sauna, or the racquetball/squash courts. Infants may not be left in carriers while their guardian exercises nearby. Carriages/ strollers are not permitted on the track.
- Age 5-11 years:
For health and safety reasons, children of these ages are not permitted in the weight and cardio areas, with the exception of enrollment in programs.
- Age 12-13 years:
With proper direct supervision, children of this age are permitted in all areas. For safety reasons, they may not sponsor guests or supervise other children.
- Age 14 -17 years:
Youths of this age are permitted in all areas without supervision. For safety reasons, they may not sponsor guests or supervise children.
Swimming Pool Use
- Only Swim Diapers are approved for pool use. Periodic bathroom breaks should be encouraged by parents.
- Each adult may bring in up to 3 children if there are any non-swimmers in the group, and 5 children if all are swimmers.
- Children who cannot swim without the aid of flotation devices are considered non-swimmers. Flotation devices approved for non-swimmer use must be Coast Guard Certified Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) and presented to the lifeguard for inspection upon entering the pool.
- “Water Wings” are not Coast Guard Certified PFDs and are therefore not approved.
ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES AND FACILITY RESERVATIONS
Facility Rentals and Group Reservations:
Areas within the SRFC, MBAC, and outdoor recreation spaces may be scheduled for student, University, and community groups. Contact David Mahan at (207) 581-1051 for facility rental price quotes, scheduling options, and reservations.
SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Emergency:
All Campus Recreation employees who are on-duty in the SRFC and MBAC during hours of operation are certified with First Aid and Professional Rescuer CPR/AED. In the event of a medical emergency inside theses facility, please notify SRFC staff immediately and they will assess the patient and determine what medical treatment is needed.
Non-emergency:
For non-emergency aid such as ice and band aids, please go to the Equipment Issue Desk in the SFRC or the Entry Desk the MBAC. Please also immediately inform Campus Recreation staff of any unsafe condition, suspicious activity, or maintenance/ custodial needs.
CONDUCT AND COMMUNITY
Campus Recreation Human Dignity Statement:
We recognize, understand, and encourage celebration of the human differences that surround us. We ask you to participate in fostering this spirit. Any expression of bigotry, hatred, prejudice or disrespect is inconsistent with the ideals of preserving human dignity and contradicts the values of healthful living and fair play promoted by the University of Maine and our staff.
Code of Conduct:
The University of Maine's codes of conduct are in action in Campus Recreation facilities and programs at all times. Use of University of Maine facilities is a privilege and participants are expected to be good citizens and respect the rights of others. Individuals who engage in unacceptable or irresponsible behavior may be subject to further disciplinary action as outlined in the University of Maine Student Conduct Code (PDF), policies of Human Resources and other University of Maine Policies, and/or state and federal Law.
SERVICES POLICIES
Equipment Checkout:
- Sports equipment, locks, and towels (see below) are available for free checkout at the Equipment Issue Desk at the SRFC. Climbing equipment for use at the MBAC is available for checkout at the Maine Bound Entry Desk.
- A MaineCard, RecCard, or Daily Guest Pass receipt is required to check out equipment from the Equipment Issue Desk or the Maine Bound Entry Desk.
- Equipment must be returned at least 15 minutes prior to facility close.
- Participants are financially responsible for any loss or damage to equipment while it is in their possession and/or in their responsibility, including equipment used by their sponsored guest. Participants will be assessed up to the market value for replacement of lost/damaged items.
- Campus Recreation can not responsible for loss or damage to personal equipment or apparel utilized by participants in any facility operated by the Department.
Towel Service
- Towel Service can be obtained at the Equipment Issue Desk.
- Locker rentals include towel service. Renters must show their receipt at the time of locker purchase to receive a towel. After that, to receive a clean towel, a dirty towel must be turned in. Additional towels will not be provided for a rented locker.
- Members may check out a towel for daily use with their ID.
- Lost or stolen towels will be the responsibility of those using the service and result in a $10 replacement charge.
Outdoor Equipment Rental:
- Outdoor recreational equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) is available at the SRFC Equipment Issue Desk. SRFC members and individuals from the community may rent outdoor equipment. Members receive reduced rates.
- Outdoor equipment reservations may be made up to two weeks in advance. Equipment must be picked up and returned by 5:00pm on the designated dates. Late returns will be assessed a charge.
- Participants are financially responsible for any loss or damage to equipment while it is in their possession, including equipment. Participants will be assessed the market value for replacement of lost/damaged items.
