The UMaine Tackle Football Club
was formed in the fall of 2005, and has become one of the largest
and fastest growing clubs on campus.
The mission of the club is to
allow football players who lack the time, interest, ability, or
NCAA eligibility to play on the varsity team to continue to play
competitive football into their collegiate careers.
The experience level on the team
varies from former college players, to some with a complete lack
of formal football experience, but all have one thing in common;
love for the game of football. Most players have at least some H.S.
experience, but beginners are welcome to join as well.
The club was the very first
college club level team founded in the northeast. With the
addition of the University of Vermont club team, UMaine is no
longer the sole school with a club program, but still has bragging
rights of being the only school in the country with club and
varsity programs at the same school.
UMaine will be competing in the
Northeast Independent Football League (NIFL), which is an "A"
division league Semi-Pro league with teams in Maine, New
Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts founded in 2006. The Black
Bears were successful in their inaugural season winning the East
Division and competing in the first New England Bowl championship
game. For information on the league or it's teams, check out their
web site at
www.niflgame.com .
The club is currently preparing
to defend their East Division crown in the upcoming 2007 season,
and spots are still available. The team is also looking for
volunteers, assistant coaches, and managers as well.
