Programs: Fitness, Intramurals, Family/Youth, and Outdoors - Group Exercise, Specialty, and Instructional Classes


Free Classes: A selection of general group exercise classes is free. During the first week of each semester (Spring, Summer, Fall) all classes are free.


FitPasses

FitPasses only grant access to Group Exercise classes, not access to the facility. A Full MembershipEarly Bird Pass, or Punch Pass is required for FitPass purchase.

  • Semester FitPass: $60; provides unlimited access to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires at the end of the semester.
  • 25-Class FitPass: $50; provides 25 visits to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires after 25 uses, or 1 year from the date of purchase, whichever comes first.
  • Summer FitPass: $35; provides unlimited access to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires at the end of the summer.
  • Drop-In Pass: $4 for any fee-based group fitness class except when specified.

Summer 2012 Group Exercise Classes:

Where available, you can click on the class name to see a video clip.  Class times are noted on the schedule.  All classes are 50 minutes unless otherwise noted.  Group Ex classes that are not marked as “FREE” require purchase of Daily Fitness Class Pass or FitPass.  Subject to change without notice.

Aqua Burn Research indicates a greater calorie burn in the water. Come heat up in the pool with this cardio/toning interval class using plenty of fun pool tools! FREE
Outdoor Bootcamp
This class will target all major muscles groups in the body using a variety of equipment and incorporate intervals of high intensity cardio training with strength training to leave you feeling tough looking tone. All outdoor class participants must check-in at the front desk before heading to the Tennis Courts.  Incase of inclement weather, classes will be held upstairs in the Foster Room. FREE
Beginner Step (Fit Club Only) Learn the basics of stepping while moving to great music. A great low-impact choreography based cardiovascular workout.  The platforms can be adjusted to meet all needs.
Butts & Gutts A foolproof way to shape and tone the lower body.  Class uses a variety of fitness equipment to target the core & legs. FREE
Circuit Cycling Five minute circuits of moderate indoor biking mixed with total body strength training to promote a calorie burn and total body tone. (Fit Club Only)
Core Pilates Exercises emphasizing the deep core will tone and strengthening your body, decrease pain and improve posture.
Cycle X This class will simulate riding over various types of terrain; hills, flats, intervals and more. A great class for beginner or advanced cyclists.  Participants may call (581-1078) or stop by the front desk up to 1 hour before class to reserve a bike.
Fitness Yoga This class focuses on strength and stability poses along with breathing & relaxation to keep your body limber and mind clear.
Gentle Yoga Hour
Learn the movement principles that form the foundation of yoga practice; breathing, relaxation, strength, flexibility, awareness and energy movement throughout the body.
Hard Core & More Just like hardcore, but this class will also incorporate strength training exercises to promote a total body tone.  FREE
On the Ball Pilates (Fit Club Only) Exercises emphasizing the deep core will tone and strengthen your body, improve your mental and physical well-being, decrease pain and improve posture. Class will use the stability ball as the primary training tool.
Kettlebell Krazy Swing into shape! Engage multiple muscle groups at once—a complete workout in a short amount of time. Class will incorporate intervals of kettlebells with easy to follow conditioning drills. Gentleman this is not your tradidtional aerobics class.
Kickboxing A perfect blend of cardiovascular training and self defense.  This high energy class utilizes the basic punches and kicks of boxing, leaving a powerful impression on your body.  FREE
RIP Strength Traditional strength training for men and women of all ages. Movements are matched to popular music targeting the legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms and abs. FREE
Short Circuits (Fit Club Only) You can do anything for one minute! This circuit training style class includes minute intervals of easy to follow, strength, cardio and power drills. A great way to build strength and stamina while keeping the heart rate up.  A variety of equipment will be used each week.
Sunrise Outdoor Yoga Start your day with an awakening and energizing yoga experience.  Our traditional Fitness Yoga style class mixed with morning sunshine and nature.  Please dress in layers.  All outdoor class participants must check-in at the front desk before heading to the Tennis Courts.  Incase of inclement weather, classes will be held upstairs in the Foster Room.
Step N Strength A great cardio, step workout paired with resistance training. For those who have the basics of stepping. FREE
Strictly Step This cardio class will incorporate rhythm and classic step choreography to the latest music at an intermediate level. FREE
Zumba® Fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will captivate you for life!

Summer 2012 Specialty Programs and Fitness Challenges: Summer 2012 Printable Handout (Two Pages)

After-Work Employee Fit Club: The first 15 new participants to the program receive 1 entire session FREE!  Contact Julia Avans directly on First Class for this opportunity.  This wellness program was designed exclusively for UMaine faculty and staff. These student-free, small group classes will get you on the fast track to reaching optimal health. A health risk appraisal and fitness assessment are also included in the program to help personalize the program to your specific goals and needs. With no membership required, EFC is a great way to ease into a workout environment. Session 1: May 17 to June 28. Session 2: July 9 to August 16. Member: $35; Non-Member: $70.

“Big Bears to Little Bears” Challenge: During this 12-week program, teams meets with a personal trainer twice a week and have unlimited access to group fitness classes.  Earn points by % of body weight lost, weekly challenges, attendance, etc.Winning team receives a prize package and all participants receive a T-shirt. 3-6 persons per group. By far the best fitness package we have to offer! Kick-Off Meeting: Tuesday May 22nd at 5:30 pm in the Rec Center Conference Room. Group and training time preferences must be submitted to Julia Avans by Friday May 25. Summer Session Dates: May 29 to August 20. Member: $110; Non-Member: $135.

Summer 2012 Instructional Programs: Summer 2012 Printable Handout (Two Pages)

Tae Kwon Do: “The way of the foot and the fist”. Learn the classic hand strikes and trademark kicks of traditional Tang Soo Do, Mu Duk Kwan tae kwon do. Build upon your fitness, discipline and self-defense in this martial arts class. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm. Session Dates: May 8 to June 19. Member: $50; Non-Member: $65.

Stand-Up Paddle Board Yoga: Take in the beauty of nature with this floating fitness class!  Class will combine the basics of stand-up paddle boarding with the strength, flexibility and relaxation components of our popular Fitness Yoga class. Course will begin with an indoor introduction to safety and use of the boards before heading out onto the open water. Exact meeting location TBD. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00pm. Session Dates: July 10 to August 16. Member: $80; Non-Member: $95

Summer 2012 Lifetime Activities and Services: Summer 2012 Printable Handout (Two Pages)

Fitness Assessment: A very important tool to benchmark one’s current health and fitness levels in order to establish reasonable fitness goals, develop accurate exercise recommendations and chart progress.  Assessment includes baseline measurements and physical fitness assessments. Results will be interpreted and provided to you in a report for you to keep. Member: $21. Non-Member: $28.

Personal Training: A personal trainer is involved in developing and applying physical activity programs to help individuals achieve their personal fitness goals.  A fitness assessment is required before any PT services may be rendered.  Both individual and buddy trainings are available.  Fees are per person.  Click here for info, or see handout above.

ACE Personal Training /Group Fitness Exam Dates: Saturdays: May 12, June 9, July 14 and August 11. at 1:00 pm. There are 15 seats available. Visit acefitness.org for exam fees.
