Free Classes: A selection of general group exercise classes is free. During the first week of each semester (Spring, Summer, Fall) all classes are free.


FitPasses only grant access to Group Exercise classes, not access to the facility. A Full MembershipEarly Bird Pass, or Punch Pass is required for FitPass purchase. FitPasses are non-refundable, but may be transferred.  If transferred, services must be used before the expiration date.

  • Semester FitPass: $65; provides unlimited access to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires at the end of the semester.
  • 25-Class FitPass: $55; provides 25 visits to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires after 25 uses, or 1 year from the date of purchase, whichever comes first.
  • Summer FitPass: $40; provides unlimited access to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires at the end of the summer.
  • Drop-In Pass: $5 for any fee-based group fitness class except when specified.

Where available, you can click on the class name to see a video clip.  Class times are noted on the schedule.  All classes are 50 minutes unless otherwise noted.  Group Ex classes that are not marked as “FREE” require purchase of Daily Fitness Class Pass or FitPass.  Subject to change without notice.

Aqua Burn Low impact, cardio/toning interval class using plenty of fun pool tools! FREE
Butts & Gutts A foolproof way to shape and tone the lower body.  Class uses a variety of fitness equipment to target the core & legs. FREE
Campus Trail Bootcamp
Enjoy the outdoors and the campus trail while getting in shape! Each week will offer new challenges and body weight exercises along the way to make running fun. Cardio is not easy on your own so let’s conquer it together! Meet in lobby. Ends Oct. 30. FREE
Cardio Barbell Blast Tone and strengthen while increasing the heart rate using barbells in this energy packed, body pump inspired class.  Movements targeting the legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms and abs are choreographed to popular music. FREE
Circuit Training Jump from station to station for a great heart pumping and strength building workout. Many of the exercises in the circuits will be body weight. Rise and Shine and get your day started! FREE
Combat Fitness A functional workout regimen designed to prepare individuals for the rigors of modern combat, or the physical stress of daily life.   The goal of Combat Fitness is to enhance athleticism by building on endurance, power, and agility. FREE
CrossFit Black Bear Get results with constantly varied functional movements at a high intensity. Workouts vary weekly and can be modified for all levels. Class is taught by a certified CrossFit Level 1 Trainer.FREE
Cycle X This class will simulate riding over various types of terrain; hills, flats, intervals and more. A great class for beginner or advanced cyclists.  Participants may call (581-1082, press 1) or stop by the front desk up to 1 hour before class to reserve a bike.
Cycle X Core Our traditional Cycle X class followed by 15-20 minutes of core training.
Cycle ‘N’ Strength
Do you like cycling but cringe at the thought of a 50 minute cycle class?  If so, then this is the class for you because it’s the best of both cardio and strength!  This class will mix body weight functional strength movements with cycling.
Delirium Burst into this insane workout! Maximum intensity body weight, plyometric and strength intervals will be followed by short bouts of rest.  This intermediate to advanced workout can be the next step you take to reaching your goals.   FREE
Fitness Yoga This class focuses on strength and stability poses along with breathing & relaxation to keep your body limber and mind clear.
Fusion Flow
Improve your core strength with whole-body movement in a fast-paced Pilates/yoga fusion focused on improving flexibility, strength and balance. The dynamic flow of movements will raise your heart rate and challenge your coordination. No prior knowledge of yoga or Pilates necessary, just go with the flow!  Class is limited to 10. Must get a pass from the front desk.
Gentle Yoga Learn the movement principles that form the foundation of yoga practice; breathing, relaxation, strength, flexibility, awareness and energy movement throughout the body.
HIIT It Get more results in less time with a 30 minute High Intensity Interval Training session! Each week will vary with different cardio exercises that include short bursts of high intensity. FREE
Intermediate Fitness Yoga An extension of Fitness Yoga; this class maintains focus on strength and stability poses while introducing more advanced backbends, arm balances and inversions. Knowledge of basic asanas and sun salutations is needed.
Kettlebell Krazy Swing into shape! Engage multiple muscle groups at once—a complete workout in a short amount of time. Class will incorporate intervals of kettlebells with easy to follow conditioning drills. Gentleman this is not your traditional aerobics class.
Outdoor Fitness Yoga Start your day with an awakening and energizing yoga experience. Our traditional Fitness Yoga style class mixed with morning sunshine and nature. Please dress in layers. All outdoor class participants must check-in at the front desk before heading to the Tennis Courts. In case of inclement weather, classes will be held in the Foster Room.
Pilates Exercises emphasizing the deep core will tone and shtrengthen your body, improve your mental and physical well-being, decrease pain, and improve posture.
Power Hour Keep your midweek going with shots of fitness! Includes minute intervals of easy to follow strength and cardio drills. FREE
Step Aerobics Step into a great cardio workout! This class is focused on cardio movements using a step platform.  Great for all levels with options for both high and low impact.  FREE
Stretched Out Match your fitness with flexibility. We will cover the whole body in a class that focuses on relaxing tight muscles through prolonged stretching. This class is a great way to increase your range of motion! FREE
Total Body Sculpt Check out this muscle chiseling workout! This class includes various exercises to strengthen every muscle. FREE
A perfect blend of the TRX suspension training system, kettlebells, and cardio intervals for a full body functional workout.  Stamina, strength, and core-what more could you ask for!  6 person limit.  Participants may call (581-1082, press 1) or stop by the front desk up to 1 hour before class to reserve a spot.

A comprehensive 12-week team workout challenge geared towards weight-loss and improved fitness. Teams of 3-6 people meet twice a week with a personal trainer and have unlimited access to our group fitness classes. By far the best package deal we have to offer!

If you are thinking about participating in Big Bears to Little Bears, the Kick-Off Meeting is a great chance to get your questions answered and learn more about the program before you sign up.

Modeled after our well-known Big Bears to Little Bears program, Group Fit is for those looking for a challenge, someone who has hit a plateau in their own workouts, or for those who are bored with their current fitness routine. Work with a personal trainer for one hour twice a week in a group setting (3-6 people) for 12 weeks plus attend unlimited group fitness classes and watch your fitness levels sky rocket. Your trainer will push you to the max every session and will expect the same energy and determination in return.  It is recommended you are able to run a mile without stopping, complete a full push up and perform proper body weight squats.  Our goal is to help you become the best version of YOU! Initial and post assessments will be taken.  You will get a body fat assessment via a 3-sight skin-fold test, a sub max VO2 test via a 1.5 mile timed run test and various other tests to bench mark improvement.  Group Fit does not award points. Includes a semester FitPass. Register for a time at the front desk.

This is not your typical workout class, but a class that will teach compound weight training exercises to build true strength.  The class is meant to empower women to weight train and feel good about their bodies and what it can do! Have you always wanted to try a triathlon, but didn’t know where to start? Well here is your chance! Train twice a week for 6 weeks with a personal trainer who is also UMaine’s 200-yard butterfly record holder,  as he prepares you for the Black Bear Sprint Triathlon on campus. Sergey has been swimming for 9 years and will focus on training you how to swim with correct mechanics for the most efficient swim. You will receive a training regimen to keep you motivated and get you in peak physical condition for race day.  You will also receive swimming, biking, and running instructions to improve your performance.  Registration for the Black Bear Triathlon not included.

In collaboration with Gateway Seniors Without Walls, Tai Chi is a great class for those 55+ or anyone interested. Tai Chi has been practiced in China for centuries for health, meditation and as a martial art. Research shows the slow and gentle movements of Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, and improve balance, reducing the likelihood of falls by up to 40%.

The basic attacks and defensive techniques of this Japanese art focus on turning an attacker’s delivery and energy against them.

“The way of the foot and the fist”.
Learn the classic hand strikes and trademark kicks of traditional Tang Soo Do, Mu Duk Kwan tae kwon do.

HoopDance is a FUN low-impact cardiovascular workout that strengthens core muscles, tones the arms and legs, improves flexibility, balance and self-image and reduces stress.  In this beginner’s class you will learn to hoop around the waist, hips, legs, chest and perform basic dance moves.  Hoops are provided for use during class.  Hoopnotica Certified Instructor, Trish Hayes, teaches the class.

This deep water aqua fitness program will have you suspended in the deep end utilizing floating belts and water weights for an awesome workout.  The program is available to Members for free.  Non-members can purchase an In-Deep Aqua Pass good for the entire semester.

ACE Group Fitness Instructor Course – #110101Register Online Here
This 12-week course will give you the knowledge and skills to pass the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Exam.  You will be able to safely and effectively design and lead group fitness classes.  You will learn key concepts from exercise physiology, kinesiology, anatomy, nutrition, healthy eating, and weight and stress management.
Highly recommended for students pursuing a group fitness position with Campus Recreation.

ACE Personal Trainer Course – #110102Register Online Here
This 12-week course will give you the knowledge and skills to pass the ACE Personal Trainer Exam.  The class will cover anatomy, physiology, training techniques, injury prevention, special populations and strategies for effective personal training.  Each week will include  hands on demos of case studies that introduces a variety of equipment you can use to train your clients.  Highly recommended for students pursuing a personal trainer position with Campus Recreation.
Meets: Sundays 1:00-3:00 p.m.
