Fitness, Intramurals, and Outdoor Programs - Group Exercise, Specialty, and Instructional Classes


Free Classes: A selection of general group exercise classes is free. During the first week of each semester (Spring, Summer, Fall) all classes are free.


FitPasses

FitPasses only grant access to Group Exercise classes, not access to the facility. A Full MembershipEarly Bird Pass, or Punch Pass is required for FitPass purchase. FitPasses are non-refundable, but may be transferred.  If transferred, services must be used before the expiration date.

  • Semester FitPass: $65; provides unlimited access to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires at the end of the semester.
  • 25-Class FitPass: $55; provides 25 visits to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires after 25 uses, or 1 year from the date of purchase, whichever comes first.
  • Summer FitPass: $40; provides unlimited access to all fee-based group fitness classes; expires at the end of the summer.
  • Drop-In Pass: $5 for any fee-based group fitness class except when specified.

Group Exercise Classes:

Where available, you can click on the class name to see a video clip.  Class times are noted on the schedule.  All classes are 50 minutes unless otherwise noted.  Group Ex classes that are not marked as “FREE” require purchase of Daily Fitness Class Pass or FitPass.  Subject to change without notice.

Summer 2013 classes are listed below:

Aqua Burn Low impact, cardio/toning interval class using plenty of fun pool tools! FREE
Better Balance Train both static and dynamic balance.  Regular participation will improve coordination, performance and posture. Take home exercises that you can use to improve activities of daily living and reduce risk of falls and injuries.  FREE
Cardio Barbell Blast Tone and strengthen while increasing the heart rate using barbells in this energy packed, body pump inspired class.  Movements targeting the legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms and abs are choreographed to popular music. FREE
Combat Fitness A functional workout regimen designed to prepare individuals for the rigors of modern combat, or the physical stress of daily life.   The goal of Combat Fitness is to enhance athleticism by building on endurance, power, and agility. FREE
Core Pilates Exercises emphasizing the deep core will tone and strengthen your body, decrease pain, and improve posture.
CrossFit Get results with constantly varied functional movements at a high intensity. Workouts vary weekly and can be modified for all levels. Class is taught by a certified CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. FREE
Cycle X This class will simulate riding over various types of terrain; hills, flats, intervals and more. A great class for beginner or advanced cyclists.  Participants may call (581-1082, press 1) or stop by the front desk up to 1 hour before class to reserve a bike.
Cycle & Core Our traditional Cycle X class followed by 15-20 minutes of core training.
Fitness Yoga This class focuses on strength and stability poses along with breathing & relaxation to keep your body limber and mind clear.
Gentle Yoga Learn the movement principles that form the foundation of yoga practice; breathing, relaxation, strength, flexibility, awareness and energy movement throughout the body.
Kickboxing A perfect blend of cardiovascular training and self defense.  This high energy, low impact class utilizes the basic punches and kicks of boxing, leaving a powerful impression on your body.  FREE
Outdoor Bootcamp This class will target all major muscles groups in the body using a variety of equipment and incorporate intervals of high intensity cardio training with strength training to leave you feeling tough looking tone. All outdoor class participants must check-in at the front desk before heading to the Tennis Courts. In case of inclement weather, classes will be held on the MAC Court.  FREE
Outdoor Yoga Start your day with an awakening and energizing yoga experience. Our traditional Fitness Yoga style class mixed with morning sunshine and nature. Please dress in layers. All outdoor class participants must check-in at the front desk before heading to the Tennis Courts. In case of inclement weather, classes will be held upstairs in the Foster Room.  FREE
Power Hour Keep your midweek going with shots of fitness! Includes minute intervals of easy to follow strength and cardio drills. FREE
In-Deep! Aqua Jog, tread, twist and more in this zero impact environment.  The buoyancy of the water & jogger belt greatly reduce joint stress.  The density of water creates even and fluid resistance to comfortably tone and strengthen muscles.  FREE
TRX/Kettlebell A perfect blend of TRX suspension training and kettlebells for peak results. Stamina, Strength, Core & more!
Zumba® Fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will captivate you for life!

NEW Time! After Work Employee Fit Club: This wellness program was designed exclusively for UMaine faculty and staff.  Student-free, small group classes will get you on the fast track to reaching optimal health. A fitness assessment is included in the program to help personalize the program to your specific goals and needs. With no membership required, EFC is a great way to ease into a workout environment.  Classes shown in table below.  Summer Session: June 3 to July 19. Member: $35; Non-Member: $70.

After Work Employee Fit Club

Mondays @ 5:00 p.m.
Wednesdays @ 5:00 p.m. Fridays @ 5:00 p.m.
Cycle & Core Gentle Yoga Cardio Barbell Blast
Cycle through hills, flats, intervals, and more. A great class for beginner or advanced cyclists. Format is 30-35 minutes of cycling followed by 10-15 minutes of core work. Focus on breathing, relaxation, strength, flexibility, awareness and moving energy through the body; movement principles that form the foundation of yoga. Traditional strength training for men and women of all ages. Movements matched to popular music target the legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms and abs.

Tae Kwon Do: “The way of the foot and the fist”.  Learn the classic hand strikes and trademark kicks of traditional Tang Soo Do, Mu Duk Kwan tae kwon do. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Summer Session: June 3 to July 19.  Member: $50; Non-Member: $65

Aikido: The basic attacks and defensive techniques of this Japanese art focus on turning an attacker’s delivery and energy against them. Meets Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Summer Session: June 3 to July 31. Member: $50; Non-Member: $65.

Belly Dance: You’ve seen Shakira! Come learn this ancient form of arabic dance.  Shimmy your cares away as you firm up to middle eastern music with a professional dancer as your guide.  Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Summer Session: June 3 to July 19. Member: $30; Non-Member: $45.

In-Deep! Aqua Class: This deep water aqua fitness program will have you suspended in the deep end utilizing floating belts and water weights.  The program is available to members for free.  Non-members can purchase an In-Deep Class Pass good for the entire semester. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Summer Session: June 3 to July 19. Member: FREE!; Non-Member: $45.

“Big Bears to Little Bears”: During this 12-week challenge, teams meets with a personal trainer twice a week and have unlimited access to group fitness classes.  Groups earn points with weekly attendace, %  weight-loss and fitness challenge improvements. Winning team receives a prize package. All participants receive T-shirts. By far the best package deal we have to offer! 3-6 people per group. BBLB Kick-Off Meeting: Mon May 20 at 5:30 pm in the Rec Center Conference Room. Group time preferences must be submitted to Derek Drouin at 581-3482 or via email at derek.drouin@umit.maine.edu by Friday May 17.  Summer Session: May 28 to August 20. Member: $110; Non-Member: $135.

Fitness Assessment: A very important tool to benchmark one’s current health and fitness levels in order to establish reasonable fitness goals, develop accurate exercise recommendations and chart progress.  Assessment includes baseline measurements and physical fitness assessments. Results will be interpreted and provided to you in a report for you to keep. Member: $21. Non-Member: $28.

Personal Training: A personal trainer is involved in developing and applying physical activity programs to help individuals achieve their personal fitness goals.  A fitness assessment is required before any PT services may be rendered.  Both individual and buddy trainings are available.  Fees are per person.  Click here for info, or see handout above.

ACE Personal Trainer Course: A great way to land a job at Campus Recreation! This 12-week course will cover anatomy, physiology, training techniques, injury prevention, special populations and strategies for effective personal training. Each week will include an intense 30-minute workout introducing a variety of equipment you can use to train your clients. Meets Tuesdays 5:15-7:45 p.m. Summer Session: May 28  to Aug 13. Member & Non-Member: $130.Price includes course book and study materials.  Recieve $40 off your exam fee just by taking the course!
