Programs - Maine Bound

Maine Bound is a program of Campus Recreation at the University of Maine. It is based out of the Maine Bound Adventure Center. Through Maine Bound, we offer a comprehensive outdoor experience for all skill levels. By combining recreation and education our programs offer adventure opportunities for every lifestyle while instilling skills that are used in everyday campus life. Through our professional staff and devoted student instructors we are passionate about educating everyone in all the responsible fun and adventure that the majestic Maine outdoors has to offer.

The Maine Bound program consists of the following: indoor rock climbing, instructional programs, trips, discounted ski pass sales, academic courses, and challenge course activities. For first year students, we offer OPTIONS orientation trips during the week before Fall classes begin.

Please note: For all trips that list a pre-trip meeting, that meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the Thursday before the trip. The registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. on the day of the pre-trip meeting or, if there is no pre-trip meeting, by 5:00 p.m. on the day before the trip.

Wilderness First Responder: This 90 hour program covers a vast range of injuries and illnesses, everything from life-threatening to minor. You will learn how to assess a patient, and how to make an educated decision on the best course of action. The curriculum will be a mix of both lecture and hands-on lessons, including scenarios. This is a SOLO certification course. No prior medical experience necessary.

“Learn to Lead Climb” Clinic: This course is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of lead climbing in the comfort of the climbing gym. It is well suited to students who want to move from top roping to sport or traditional lead climbing.

Intro to XC Skiing (Classic): Cross country skiing is a sport that can be enjoyed locally; it requires minimal gear and it provides a great workout. We can help you improve your skills! Receive instruction on Nordic skiing techniques, track and touring techniques, selection and use of clothing, and winter safety tips. Remember, ski rental is included!

Intro to Ice Climbing: Our instructors will cover everything you need to know to have a fun, safe day climbing ice. This beginners’ course will cover French technique/flat footing skills, front pointing, ice tool placement, belaying, rappelling, and ice anchors.

Women’s XC Ski Race: Ladies of all ages and abilities are welcome to join us in this time- honored 5k cross country ski race. It’s a day of fun, food, and friendly competition with an awesome community of women. Entry is free but we will be accepting donations to benefit Spruce Run and Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Shelters and Programs ($5 recommended). Both skate and classic styles are accepted. Ski rentals donated by Campus Recreation.

Multi-Pitch Clinic: This clinic will introduce you to the basics of multi-pitch climbing: anchor building, rope management, partner communication, and belaying off the anchor with efficiency and safety. It is well suited to people who want to move from single-pitch leading to multi-pitch sport or traditional leading.

Kayak Roll Clinic: Chase away your winter blues in the pool while you learn this essential kayak skill. Our experienced paddle staff will walk you step by step through a sequence that will have you on your way to a great kayak roll! You will also learn the fundamentals of escaping your boat if you flip, and the steps involved in executing an Eskimo roll.

Intro to XC Skiing (Skate): This class will cover basics of cross-country skate skiing including double poling, V-1, and V-2 skating. This class will be taught on the groomed trails of the University Forest behind the SRFC. Remember, ski rental is included!

Intro to Winter Camping: Gain a better understanding of winter camping techniques, including keeping warm at night, building snow shelters & kitchens, cooking, and traveling and living in the elements. Fee includes meals.

Faculty/Staff Snowshoeing: The coordinators of Maine Bound are leading this winter wonderland snowshoe tour. Our outing includes an optional Pre-Trip that will cover clothing selection and trip planning. Our day in the snow will cover the basics of winter snowshoe travel. UMaines Wellness Manager will join us for the day, giving various nutrition and wellness tips. Remember, snowshoe rental is included!

Efficient Climber’s Toolbox: This two-part clinic takes a look at efficiency and will have you rethinking how you spend a day climbing. The skillset learned in this class can be applied to numerous applications when you are out climbing.

Full Moon Snowshoe Hike: Join us for an invigorating snowshoe hike. Let the moonlight be your headlamp. Remember, snowshoe rental is included!

Katahdin Winter Ascent: On the first day we will ski in to set up base camp and learn basic mountain climbing techniques. Learn the basics of how to stay warm, and how to cook in the winter back country. The next day we will attempt to summit, a thrill not many have experienced in winter. Learn winter camping and mountaineering skills. Fee includes transportation, equipment, food, instruction, and guides.

Snow Kitchen Building and Hot Cocoa: Come play in the snow. We will use everything we can get our hands on to make the coolest kitchen in the snow, then celebrate with a satisfying cup of hot cocoa.

Everglades Sea Kayaking:
Spend your spring break kayaking through the Everglades national park. We will spend 6 days cruising between the mangroves and dodging alligators. you will see the most beautiful sunsets while listening to the jumping dolphins...all from the seat of your kayak. Get excited to camp out on pristine beaches and floating chickees in the middle of the everglades. All transportation, food, and gear is provided.

Panama Eco-Adventure:
Let's go international for Spring break! Join Maine Bound as we travel to Boquete, panama where adventure and travel is their specialty. The beautiful, mountainous town of Boquete sits about 4000 feet about sea level and exhibits the feel of a land undiscovered. Get ready to spend you week on a 3 day, overnight, whitewater rafting and 4 days backpacking in the undisturbed wilderness the the Boquete has to offer. We will be spending 8 days, 7 nights enjoying the culture, participating in awesome adventures, and experiencing spring break how it should be experienced. This trip is all inclusive, sign up and Maine Bound will take care of the rest. All gear, lodging, airfare and food will be provided.

Mexico Rock Climbing:
El Potrero, located in Northern Mexico, is a park that has become a haven for rock climbers. Some of its limestone cliffs are 2,000 feet high! There are over 500 sport routes at El Potrero that range from beginner to advanced. We will offer top rope climbing, sport climbing instruction, and guided multi-pitch climbs. We will camp within walking distance of the climbs and experience the local culture of Hidalgo. We will also participate in a community service project while we are there. Cost includes transportation, food, instruction, and gear. This trip is suitable for beginner through intermediate climbers.

Leave No Trace: With the Leave No Trace (LNT) trainer course, you will discover the proper way to enjoy the outdoors. This course is a vital component of the nationwide program. Participants receive introductory training in LNT skills and ethics in a condensed two-day format, including one overnight. Participants will learn about the seven principles of LNT and techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills.

Sea Kayak Rescue Clinic: As you start exploring further into kayaking, a good working knowledge of rescues becomes even more important. The controlled environment of the pool is the perfect place to start! Self and partner rescues will be covered as well as additional safety information.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA): Designed for groups and their leaders, this 16-hour hands-on program covers topics ranging from preparation/prevention to assessment and treatment. Lectures and discussions are supplemented by practical work and problem-solving exercises. A SOLO certification course. Also qualifies as a WFR re-certification.

Intro to Rock Climbing: If you want to experience climbing outside, then this course is for you. The instructors will show you the ropes and teach you the skills you need for climbing outside. The day will be packed with fun, excitement and challenge.

Full Moon Canoeing: Canoe the Stillwater River. You will receive instruction on paddle strokes, technique, steering, and basic aquatic safety before enjoying a night on the water.

Pawtuckaway Bouldering: Pawtuckaway is the showpiece for bouldering in the Northeast. Novice to expert climbers are welcome; plenty of problems here to challenge everyone.

Intro White Water Kayaking: Whitewater kayaking is a fast-paced and incredibly FUN adventure sport, and we would love to help you dive in! This course begins Friday evening in Wallace Pool, where we will work on building strong fundamental boating skills. Saturday we will utilize local whitewater to learn the ins and outs of whitewater kayaking.

Intro to Sport Climbing: An intensive outdoor workshop to help make the transition from climbing inside to sport leading outside. Skills covered include quickdraw placement and clipping, threading of anchors, lead belaying, rappelling, and more.

Cutler Coast Backpacking: The first day will take us on a relaxed scenic hike to a seaside campsite where we will explore the rocky coastline and practice our backcountry cooking! The second day will include hiking along Maine’s boldest coastline with towering sea cliffs and hidden pebble beaches.  Fee includes equipment and instruction.

Intro to Sea Kayaking: We will paddle among the islands and view the wildlife of Maine’s beautiful coastline while learning the basics of sea kayaking.  Topics include strokes, safety, boat feel techniques, rules of the nautical road, and gear.  Join us to learn some important techniques and safety information while enjoying being out on the water!

Red Rock Canyon Nat’l Conservation Area
Rock Climbing:
Varnished edges, incut jugs, splitter cracks, technical faces... Red Rock’s multi-pitch routes have it all. Red Rock is just downright fun, but that’s only half the story. The Red Rock canyons are blissfully free of traffic noise and the reminders of civilization, and desert bighorn easily outnumber hikers. This trip is all inclusive. Kick off your summer the right way!
