Outdoor Programs To Introduce Opportunities to New Students

Excited to begin your life at UMaine? Looking for a different and exciting way to get started? Then Maine Bound’s OPTIONS are for you.

OPTIONS are outdoor trips with a focus on teaching you outdoor skills and helping you prepare for your upcoming college experience. Meet awesome new people, make lasting friendships, and learn about University life from experienced UMaine students.

2009 Dates:
5-Day Trips - August 23 to 28, 2009
3-Day Trips - August 26 to 28, 2009

2009 Fees:
Includes guides, meals, transportation, technical equipment, and group gear. Also includes storage of your dorm room contents while you’re away, and assistance in moving into your dorm afterwards (ask for details).
5-Day Trips - $315
3-Day Trips - $155

Each trip is rated to help you determine which experience is right for you.
* Moderate: you should be in good physical condition.

ACADIA SERVICE ADVENTURE - OATS *
$155 - August 26-28, 2009

This year, Maine Bound is partnering with The Bodwell Center for Service and Volunteerism to offer the 3-day Orientation Adventure Trip of Service (“OATS”)! Perform Acadia National Park service activities every morning and enjoy recreational activities every afternoon. Hike, bike, kayak, climb, and help clean up one of our most beautiful parks. Learn about becoming a leader in your community and have a lot of fun!
No experience necessary!

$315 - August 23-28, 2009
The Baxter Traverse is a fun and challenging way to start off your college career! We will hike and camp our way through Baxter State Park, and on our final day we will hike up Mount Katahdin. There is an amazing amount of wildlife in Baxter State Park... previous trips have had close encounters with deer, owls, bald eagles, and moose! This trip is nothing short of a fabulous time, and it will provide a sense of accomplishment, great photos, and possibly the bragging rights of summiting Mount Katahdin! If you go to school in Maine, you absolutely need to experience Baxter State Park, the land that inspired Henry David Thoreau, before the end of your college adventure. No experience necessary!

Enter the heart of the Maine Wilderness by canoe. This trips starts on the West Branch of the mighty Penobscot River and heads down into the Debskoneag Lakes Wilderness area. Nestled in the shadow of Katahdin, just south of Baxter State Park, the Deb Lakes are some of the most pristine, remote ponds in New England. Next we will travel to Clifton, Maine to the local rock climbing crag. The next two days will be spent exploring the sport of rock climbing, with a focus on belaying, climbing movements, and techniques. This trip is all about gaining skills in canoeing, climbing, and camping while enjoying the scenery and each other’s company. No experience necessary!
DAY HIKE & CANOEING EXPLORATION *
$155 - August 26-28, 2009

Join Maine Bound on a 3-day trip to Maine’s very own “Grand Canyon”, and start the semester off right! Gulf Hagas displays vertical slate walls 300-400’ deep, creating countless natural waterfalls and cascades. As part of the Appalachian trail, Gulf Hagas is situated in the heart of some of Maine’s tallest mountains, making for incredible views and for an unforgettable hiking and camping experience. Hike scenic trails, swim in one of the many refreshing pools, and take in the marvelous sights. Finish off the day relaxing around the campfire and enjoying a cozy Maine summer night. But, that’s not all! Before heading back, spend an exciting day canoeing and swimming in one of the many lakes and ponds surrounding Gulf Hagas. No experience necessary!
Climbing HIKING & CLIMBING COMBO **
$315 - August 23-28, 2009

We will start in Clifton, the local crag, and spend the first 3 days learning the fundamentals of rock climbing. We will be focusing on belaying, climbing movements, and techniques as well as other climbing principles. Then we will relocate to Baxter State Park and live off of what we carry while traveling through some of the most amazing wilderness on the East Coast. There may even be opportunity to summit multiple peaks, including the infamous Mount Katahdin. No experience necessary!

Explore Maine’s coastline from the seat of a sea kayak! We will spend our days paddling alongside seals and porpoises while exploring one of the most pristine coastal areas in Maine... Penobscot Bay. Jump-start your life at UMaine by island hopping, swimming, camping out under the stars, cooking over glacier erratics, and learning to appreciate and protect Maine’s fragile island ecosystem. No experience necessary!
