FALL 2008 Options Trips

Climbing

HIKING AND CLIMBING COMBO
Difficulty **
Come join fellow first year students and Maine Bound on a rock climbing and backpacking trip that you'll talk about for the rest of the year! Experience three days in Baxter State Park living off of what you carry while traveling through some of the most amazing wilderness on the east coast. There may even be opportunity to summit multiple peaks, including the infamous Mount Katahdin. Then, we will relocate to Clifton, the local crag, to spend the rest of our time together learning the fundamentals of rock climbing. We will be focusing on belaying, climbing movements, and techniques as well as other climbing principles. Technical equipment and group gear will be provided. No experience necessary!

PENOBSCOT BAY SEA KAYAKING
Difficulty *
Explore Maine's coastline in the best way possible, from the seat of a sea kayak! We will spend our days paddling alongside seals and porpoises while exploring one of the most pristine coastal areas in Maine - Penobscot Bay. Day-to-day island hopping, swimming, camping out under the stars, cooking over glacier erratics, and learning to appreciate Maine's fragile island ecosystem will help jump-start your UMAINE experience! And best of all, you get to share your experience with several other incoming students all anxious to discuss the year ahead! Technical equipment and group gear will be provided. No experience necessary!

BAXTER TRAVERSE
Difficulty **
The Baxter Traverse is a fun and challenging way to start off your college career! We will be hiking through Baxter State Park and camping along the way as we make our way to the base of Katahdin, which we will hike on our final day. There is an amazing amount of wildlife in Baxter; and previous trips have had close encounters with deer, owls, bald eagles, and moose! This trip is nothing short of a great time, and it will provide a sense of accomplishment (and great photos) with a possible ascent of Katahdin at the end! If you go to school in Maine, you absolutely need to experience Baxter State Park, the land that inspired Henry David Thoreau, before the end of your college adventure. Starting off your college career with this trip is a great way to begin! Hope to see you there! Technical equipment and group gear will be provided. No experience necessary!

DEBSCONEAG LAKES CANOE TRIP
Difficulty **
Enter the heart of the Maine Wilderness the same way it has been done for hundreds of years - by canoe. This trips starts on the West Branch of the mighty Penobscot River. After spending a couple days on the river, your trip will take you canoeing into the Debsoneag Lakes Wilderness area. Nestled in the shadow of Katahdin, just south of Baxter State Park, the Deb lakes are some of the most pristine, remote ponds in New England. This is a great beginning to your adventure at UMaine, while getting to know some amazing people! Throughout the trip, we will be in search of picturesque moments while learning important camping skills and enjoying the company. What better way to start off your college career! Technical equipment and group gear will be provided. No experience necessary!

100-MILE WILDERNESS BACKPACKING
Difficulty **
Come spend a week backpacking in the infamous 100-Mile Wilderness, the longest stretch of uninterrupted wilderness on the entire Appalachian Trail (AT). This trail attracts people from around the country, and luckily it’s right in our own backyard. We will be doing a light and fast trek focusing on proper preparation to complete the miles in the time allotted. Spend your days hiking, wildlife watching, and camping in pristine mountains with views of Katahdin, the terminus of the AT. Technical equipment and group gear will be provided. No experience necessary!

ACADIA ADVENTURE/SERVICE
Difficulty *
This year Maine Bound is partnering with the Bodwell Center for Service and Volunteerism to offer the Orientation Adventure Trip of Service, OATS! This is a trip to Acadia National Park to do service in the mornings and follow-up with outdoor activities every afternoon. Hiking, biking, kayaking, rock climbing, and cleaning up our Nation’s environmental reserves in one of the most beautiful parks. Learn about becoming a leader in your community and have a lot of fun! No experience necessary!
