TRAVELOG: Quebec's James Bay Region
Mike Hermann, UMaine cartographer, and Hans Carlson, recent graduate of UMaine's Canadian Studies/History program and currently a Canadian Studies lecturer at SUNY-Plattsburgh, drove round trip 3500 miles to visit Cree communities in a region of Quebec the size of Germany.

 Nadine Bismuth, a new and important voice in Quebec literature lectured at UMaine Wednesday on her new book and collections of short stories as part of La Semaine de la Francophonie 2009, a March 23-27 celebration throughout New England.

Canadian Studies Student Receives Prestigious FULBRIGHT Award
UMaine PhD Candidate Shannon Risk has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship to study history in Canada for this academic year. Canadian Fulbrights are competitive. Ms. Risk is the eighth UMaine graduate student to receive this award since 1992. She will conduct research at the University of New Brunswick to examine how citizenship and the rights of citizenship were perceived in rural Maine and New Brunswick during the suffrage movement.

Killam Canadian Fund's
Second Recipient
Brenna Walsh, a Canadian citizen from Dartmouth, NS, received the Killam Canadian Fund's second award. Ms. Walsh, a UMaine junior enrolled in Chemistry, was selected because of her high academic standing.
Charity Harmon, a Music Education major from Ludec, Alberta received the first award.
The Killam Canadian Fund, established with an anonymous donation of $25,000 will provide support to UMaine undergraduates whose home country is Canada.

Honors & Awards
Canadian-American Center Receives largest Canadian Embassy grant awarded to any applicant
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada through its Canadian Embassy grant program awarded the Can-Am Center over $17,000 for program enhancement. This grant represents the largest single grant awarded by the Embassy in this fiscal year. Funds will be used to produce conferences, provide speakers, and strengthen the Canadian Studies program at UMaine.

Can-Am Center receives Continued Designation as a National Resource Center for Canada
The Canadian-American Center received notification of its continued designation as a National Resource Center for Canada by the United States Department of Education under the Title VI program for the next 4 years. Funding for 2006-2007 is set at $225,307 and $901,228 over the four-year grant cycle. The award was made to the Northeast Consortium which consists of The University of Maine and Plattsburgh State University of New York.

Can-Am Center will continue to offer FLAS Awards
The Canadian-American Center received notification of continued support from Title VI, Department of Education to make FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Awards to graduate students for academic year support of their research in Canadian Studies and for summer awards to study French intensively. The amount of the award is $94,000 for 2006-2007 and $376,000 over the next four years.

Bowen Scholarship in Canadian History
Dr. Dawn S. Bowen, who earned her Master's degree in History with a concentration on Canada from UMaine in 1990, recently gave UM Foundation an endowment of over $54,000 to establish a scholarship in Canadian History. |
"The supportive environment at UMaine that existed in the History Department and the Canadian-American Center convinced me to choose a career in academics." In recognition of those faculty who encouraged her interest in Canadian Studies, Dr. Bowen has established this scholarship to enable other students to pursue historical research on Canadian topics. Bowen continued her studies at Queen's University in ON, earning her Ph.D. in Historical Geography, and now teaches at Mary Washington College in VA where she is Assoc. Professor of Geography.
