Pointe-à-Callière Museum, Montreal
Birthplace of Montreal and site of the Great Peace of 1701. Examination of artifacts on Amerindian life and guided tour of the special exhibit on "France and New France: 1601-1642"


Afternoon

Stewart Museum, Ile Sainte-Helene, Montreal
Examination of artifacts from the Ethnology, Firearms, Scientific Instruments and Library collections, particularly those relating to Champlain and the Amerindian presence.

Kahnawa:ke, Seigneurie and Museum
Site of the 1680 French Crown land grant, granted to the Jesuits for the benefit of the Iroquois (Mohawks) in the Seigneurie of Sault-Saint-Louis (today's Kahnawa:ke). The Kahnawa:ke Community takes the position that it does not 'belong' to the province of Québec, rather, it resides in Kanien'keha (Nation) territory accessible via Québec. Presentation on the role of the 'people of the flint' (Mohawk) and other nations of the Iroquois Confederacy and their role in the fur trade

Lachine Fur Trade Museum
Site of fur warehouse of the voyageurs. Presentation on the history of the fur trade and its extension to the Pacific Coast.

Presentation on the history and culture of the 17th century Abenaki

Place Royale Interpretation Center
Site of Champlain's fur trading post, and considered to be the cradle of French civilization in North America. Presentation on Champlain and examination of artifacts from Champlain's time found during recent excavations

Museum of Civilization

History and culture museum complex showing four exhibits relating to New France

Afternoon

Maison des Jesuites, Sillery
Site of Jesuit mission and departure point for exploration of the interior. Presentation on the role of the Jesuits, and viewing of special exhibit on the Amerindian presence in New France

Morning

Depart for Montreal.

Wendake: Hurons-Wendat community
Home to a contemporary First Nation community, descendants of Wendat who fled the Great Lakes after the war with the Five Nations and the decimation by diseases. Presentation about Wendat (Huron) history and culture, and exploration of their museum.

 



Afternoon

Seminary of Saint-Sulpice
Saint-Sulpice Seminary, erected between 1684 and 1687, is the oldest building in Montreal. Examination of artifacts from the museum, and presentation on the role of the Sulpicians in French contacts with Amerindians

Presentations by participants about their characters

Fort Chambly, Chambly
Presentation on the military life of New France with focus on the role of the Carignan-Salières Regiment and the first contingents of the soldats de la Marine.


   

Afternoon

Colonial French lunch at Fourquet-Fourchette (translation: a brewer's mashing rake, and a fork), a restaurant specializing in cuisine of New France.

Close of Institute

Return to Montreal by 2:00pm
