French-speaking people from three countries will shine a spotlight on Quebec City in 2008, as historians, descendants, and well-wishers from France, the U.S., and Canada gather to commemorate and celebrate the 1608 founding of what is now the capital of the province of Quebec, and to focus attention on some of the individuals associated with its origin 400 years ago – notably, French cartographer and Quebec's first governor Samuel de Champlain.
Celebration organizers intend the events throughout this milestone year to showcase Quebec City’s place on the national and international stage, highlighting Quebec City as the founding site of permanent French culture in North America, and as the former capital of the fur trade-based empire of New France which once reached from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Great Lakes and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.
