The Center for Science and Mathematics Education Research and the Maine Mathematics and Science Teaching Excellence Collaborative (MMSTEC) are jointly sponsoring a conference from June 20 to June 22, 2004, at The University of Maine.

The conference will open with a banquet and keynote on Sunday evening, June 20 and proceed with plenary and session speakers, workshops, round tables, and poster sessions addressing the topic of "Integrating Science and Mathematics Education Research into Teaching."

Talks and workshops will be suitable for middle, secondary, and post-secondary audiences from biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, mathematics, physics, and related fields.

The conference themes will be:

· Recent findings from science and mathematics education research;
· Methods and instruments used in research of student learning;
· Applying the findings from education research to the modification of instruction;
· Assessing research-based curricular and course reform; and
· Content and research-based undergraduate and graduate programs for teachers.

Following the conference, the MMSTEC Academy, which runs from June 23 through June 25, will continue working along the theme of "what research says about how students learn mathematics and science and how this relates to classroom practices." There will be a mathematics strand and a science strand related to these topics.
