For
the most part, I used "Understanding by Design" (Wiggins and
McTighe) as a model to establish a solid framework from which
I introduced the Backward Design Process. This curriculum design
process establishes the central role that assessment plays in
shaping instruction and monitoring its effectiveness. Instructors
thoughtfully using this process come to recognize that essential
concepts in their courses must be taught and assessed in a manner
that develops deep and enduring understanding in the students.
Instructing in this manner is often difficult in introductory
courses typically having high student enrollments. However,
the assessments created as part of our efforts are helping the
instructors identify the components of their instruction that
are effective and may then provide a basis for instructional
reform.
