University of Maine  Hutchinson Center Announces New Tourism Certificate for Fall 2006

camera with travel slidesBeginning in the fall 2006 semester, the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast, Maine will offer the first two courses in a series of courses that will lead to a University of Maine Certificate in Tourism.  Both courses, REP 254, Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management in the Hospitality Industry (Friday evening, Saturday morning), and BUA 490, Hospitality Guest Service Internship (Monday evening), will be taught by University of Maine faculty who have current experience and strong credentials in the hospitality industry.  Both courses will be offered in the evening to accommodate the schedules of working adults.

Dr. George Criner, who will serve as the instructor for REP 254, is chair of the Resource Economics and Policy Department at the University of Maine. Professor Donna Fichtner, who will teach BUA 490, is currently the Executive Director of the Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau and is a Certified Hospitality Educator.  In George Criner’s words, “I am putting together a fantastic course focused upon the small business as an entrepreneurial enterprise for the fall semester. My goal is to create a course that will be of real benefit to the students—one that will knock their socks off.”   According to Donna Fitchner, “Students find internship experiences of real personal and professional value.  I have developed an exciting set of activities, have a great syllabus prepared and ready, and am looking forward to working with adult working students.”

The University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast, Maine is pleased to announce the creation of a tourism option for our undergraduate students who live and work in Maine’s beautiful mid-coast.  Tourism, the hospitality industry, and the creative economy are major sources of economic vitality here in the mid-coast. Many of us earn our livelihoods in these segments of our workforce.

The introduction of a tourism program here in the mid-coast is designed to increase students’ knowledge, skills and options for participating in the growing tourism industry.  Students working in small businesses or those who aspire to own or contribute to the growth of a small business may be particularly interested in enrolling in courses offered as a part of the new tourism program.  Faculty teaching in the program are particularly adept at demonstrating the relationship between course outcomes and employee skills and talents associated with success in small business ventures.

All courses associated with the 22-hour certificate in tourism will be offered at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast.  Students may also take tourism course offerings on the Orono campus.  All twenty-two credits in the tourism certificate may be applied to the pursuit of a bachelor’s program in business at the University of Maine. Individual tourism courses or sets of tourism courses may enhance preparation for current employment or future employment opportunities in the tourism industry.

The tourism certificate is composed of seven courses which will be offered across the fall, spring, and summer sessions at the Hutchinson Center.  Among these offerings are courses which focus upon the economics of tourism, resource business management, principles of sustainable tourism, and internet marketing for small businesses. A wide range of electives is available to meet individual needs. To earn the certificate, all students participate in a tourism internship and service management experience.

The School of Business, Public Policy and Health, the College of Natural Science, Forestry and Agriculture and The Center for Tourism Research and Outreach (CenTRO) at the University of Maine have been instrumental in creating and supporting the new tourism certificate program.  “Helping Maine citizens take advantage of the resources we have at The Center for Tourism Research and Outreach (CenTRO) will be a key to our success” says Harold Daniel, CenTRO Director. “We help folks make connections”.

The University of Maine Fred Hutchinson Center is currently enrolling students for fall 2006 semester.  For further information, please call the Hutchinson Center 1-207-338-8000.  Registration materials are on line at http://www.hutchinsoncenter.umaine.edu/.  Registration may be done via telephone at 1-207-338-8000, in person between 7:00 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, or through personal appointment with a staff member for student advising during business hours.

University of Maine Presque Isle
Tourism Concentration

All students majoring in Recreation/Leisure will now be required to take a core of the same classes which will introduce them to the field of recreation and leisure services. The core classes have been designed to provide students with pertinent management, leadership, and programming skills as well as an introduction to the philosophical discourse of the field of recreation and tourism.

To compliment their core, they will then choose a concentration in either outdoor recreation or tourism.

Students in outdoor recreation will focus on practical applications of outdoor recreation and leadership development, wilderness expedition skills, and trip planning.

Courses in tourism will provide students with practical skills for careers in hospitality management and destination marketing. In addition, students will apply critical analysis to issues in tourism development, and use these skills to complete intensive research projects (hopefully with CenTRO!). All students will be required to do an internship which will provide the opportunity to gain the experience necessary to work in a job related to their concentration.

The following classes make up our new Tourism concentration:

Rec 401 Impacts of Tourism Development 3__
Rec 371 Tourism & the Social Sciences 3__
Rec 264 Tourism Design & Destination Marketing 3__
Rec 421 Advanced Research Methods in Tourism 3__

Students in other majors can also minor in tourism.
