Festival Research

Festivals and events are an important driver of tourism activity in a growing number of communities in Maine. The Portland Sidewalk Art Festival, American Folk Festival in Bangor, Yarmouth Clam Festival, and Rockland Lobster Festival are among some of the better known events that take place every year in Maine.

The Center for Tourism Research and Outreach (CenTRO) proposes a means of systematically measuring customer satisfaction with the festival experience and the economic impact of the festival for the region. CenTRO is also proposing to create a toolkit to be made available to festival and event managers in the state, providing guidance and instruction as to the steps and techniques to follow to facilitate independent yet consistent measurement. The proposed kit will address the need among business managers of events, both large and small, for ongoing customer satisfaction and economic impact measurement. Coupled with appropriate outreach mechanisms to help them use the information gathered to transform their events, managers will be able to respond to their clientele more appropriately and potentially enhance their own financial performance.

A project centered on the American Folk Festival in Bangor is the pilot for a future festival toolkit.
