Tourism in Maine’s Economy

Tourism and travel is an integral part of Maine’s economy.  Visitors from
out of state as well Maine residents contribute to the vitality and well‑being
of Maine businesses in many different industries.

In 2004, travelers in Maine spent $6.2 billion, nearly three-fourths from
out‑of‑state visitors:

Out-of-state visitor

  • Retail stores $1,417 million
  • Restaurants $2,292 million
  • Lodging $692 million
  • Transportation $639 million
  • Recreation $491 million
  • TOTAL = $4,531 million or 73%

Maine Residents

  • Retail stores $502 million
  • Restaurants $454 million
  • Lodging $113 million
  • Transportation $306 million
  • Recreation $292 million
  • TOTAL = $292 million or 27%

Spending by tourists ripples through the Maine economy, affecting every
sector and amplifying the total contribution that travelers make on jobs,
wages and taxes. 

In 2004, including this multiplier effect, tourism supported:

  • 176,633 jobs in Maine
  • $3.8 billion in wages
  • $531 million in government tax revenues

Travelers in Maine made 43.6 million trips in 2004.  While the number of
day trips far exceeds the number of overnight trips, overnight travelers
spend more on average. 

  • 34.7 million day trip visitors spent $3.5 billion in Maine
  • 8.9 million overnight trip visitor spent $2.7 billion in Maine

  • Downeast & Acadia - 4.2 million trips, 10%
  • Greater Portland & Casco Bay - 12.1 million trips, 28%
  • Kennebec and Moose River Valleys - 4.2 million trips, 19%
  • Maine Highlands - 3.8 million trips, 9%
  • Maine Lakes & Mountains - 7.4 million trips, 16%
  • Southern Maine Coast - 18.3 million trips, 42%

Percents do not add to 100% because some travelers visit more than one region.
