Winter Fun Events
Maine winters are long and cold. Knox-Lincoln 4-H does their
best to make our longest season more enjoyable and active. Ice skating,
snow tubing, snowshoeing and bowling are just a few of the events we offer to
our
4-Hers to beat the winter blues!
For the past few years, 4-Hers in Knox and Lincoln counties have looked forward to ice skating at Midcoast Recreation Center. This past year, we went in December. Some of the more experienced skaters helped out the first-timers. Everyone had a blast!

Tanglewood Winter Ecology Day
We are fortunate to have the Tanglewood 4-H Camp
and Learning Center in our county area. This beautiful, unspoiled forest
site is well-known for its summer camp program.
It also provides opportunities for winter fun and environmental education.
For the past two years, 4-H of Knox and Lincoln counties has offered a Winter Ecology Day at Tanglewood. 4-H members and adult volunteers don snowshoes and head down the unplowed road to the camp. Along the journey, the Tanglewood staff teaches participants about many aspects of winter ecology, including cold-weather survival of animal and plant life, track identification and camouflage.

Public Speaking Tournament
March is time for our annual Public Speaking Tournament.
4-Hers present informational talks and demonstrations, using
props and charts that they prepare themselves. Each speech
and demonstration is judged and awards are given. This is a
very important part of our 4-H year.
Gardeners Extraordinaire Workshop & Sun
Celebration
Each April, Knox -Lincoln 4-H welcomes spring by
holding a
Gardeners Extraordinaire Workshop and Sun Celebration. In the
first half of the event, we plant seeds for our summer gardens,
learning the best way to care for the seeds and seedlings as they
develop.
In the afternoon, we celebrate the sun with stories, crafts, games and fabulous food from a different culture each year. In the past, we have had Egyptian, Native American and Mayan Sun Celebrations.
Who knows which culture will help us welcome the sun next
year?!

Water All Around
4-H in Knox and Lincoln counties, in cooperation with the Knox-Lincoln Soil
and Water Conservation District, Medomak Valley Land Trust, and the Waldoboro
Recreation Department, has presented "Water All Around" for the past two years.
This FREE and FUN community water education festival for children and families
is designed to encourage young people to learn about the water all around us and
to become involved in caring for the communities in which we live.
Displays and activities from a variety of local and state-wide organizations
offer a wealth of information to attendees.
This year, a special performance by Matt Loosigian of "Earth Jams" delighted all ages with original songs like Stormdrain, Way Down and Sailing Up, Sailing Down. Many folks took the "Compass Challange" and got a free brass compass to take home! Door prizes were awarded and Chewonki's beautiful and informative "Clean Water" poster was given away to the first 100 festival goers.
Knox-Lincoln 4-H at the
Union Fair
Happening each August, the Union Fair in Union, Maine, is the biggest annual

event for Knox/Lincoln
4-H. A traditional agricultural fair, Union Fair is where
Knox/Lincoln 4-H youth showcase a year’s worth of hard work on all types of
projects and activities.
The barn area is open for the public to see the wide variety of livestock raised by 4-Hers…everything from beef cattle to rabbits, alpacas to goats. The 4-Hers and their families who participate in livestock shows stay with their animals throughout the fair and are available for questions from the public. If you come, attend some of the livestock shows that happen daily and see how dedicated and professional our 4-Hers are!
Animals aren’t all that 4-H is about! Our exhibit hall is filled with wonderful projects produced by 4-H members. Visit the hall and you could see paintings and sculpture, photography, food harvest and preservation, crafts, homemade games, poetry, woodworking, science projects, computer displays…the list goes on! Every year the variety, quantity and quality get better and better!

Annual Achievement Celebration and Dinner
October is time for a new 4-H year to begin, but we must first recognize the
hard work put in by our individual 4-H members and clubs. Project records
are judged and all are rewarded. Special recognition is given to those
4-Hers who went "above and beyond" in their project category, as well as in
their conduct at 4-H events.
