Master Gardener Brae Maple Farms Project

Brae Maple Farms Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens
Brae Maple Farm is a certified organic farm.  From the 1787 homestead with a wonderful vista of the hills west of Union, Brae Maple Farm grows a large variety of vegetables and many medicinal and culinary herbs.  Proprietors Allan and Andrea Smith, provide space and equipment for demonstration and trial gardens.  Allan and Andrea are both dedicated volunteers to the Master Gardener Program and Plant A Row.

The cobbler's house dates from the early 1900's and was moved to Brae Maple from the family's farm in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The building housed tradesmen who traveled the countryside mending shoes, pots and pans, and selling important manufactured items like needles and thread to rural housewives. Cobblers were highly valued to these isolated families and they were provided with comfortable accommodations whenever possible.

The cobbler's house will be the focal point of a large enclosed period garden featuring raised beds with household herbs, fruits, vegetables, and flowers that would be typical of the era.

Master Gardener volunteers began the project in June of this year and plan to complete the garden within a three year period. (Design by Master Gardener Betsy Anderson)

C U L I N A R Y
Basil, Chives, Dills, Egyptian onion, Garlic chive, Greek oregano, Marjoram, Parsley, Pepper, Rosemary, Sage, Sorrel, and Thyme.

M E D I C I N A L
Anise hyssop, Arnica, Borage, Camomile, Elecampane, feverfew, foxglove, lemonbalm, Mint, Pennyroyal, Self heal, and St. John's Wort.

H O U S E H O L D
Calendula, Comfrey, False Indigo, Lavender, Lemon Southernwood, Madder, Orris root, Iris, Pennyroyal, Tansy, Woad, Wormwood, and Yellow flag iris.

B I B L I C A L
Aloe, Anise, Anise hyssop, Bay, Coriander, Costmary, Cumin, Dill, Mint, Mustard, Rue, Sage, Sorrel, and Wormwood.

K I T C H E N
Asparagus, Beans, Cabbage, Carrot, Egytian Onion, Hollyhock, Leek, Lettuce, Rhubarb, and Rose.
