What is a mentor?

A mentor is an adult volunteer who is committed to supporting a teen during the challenging early years of parenting. By simply listening, bolstering self-esteem, acknowledging fears and hopes, a mentor can become a positive force for change in a young parent’s life.

What is the Teen and Young Parent Program?

The TYPP is a non-profit organization supported by a governing board made up of community members. The TYPP works in collaboration with Knox County Parenting Education and Family Services, Mid-Coast Children’s Services and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. There are professionals within these organizations to support and provide services to you and your teen parent.

What is the time commitment?

Many active mentors have jobs and families of their own, so a realistic time commitment is 2 – 4 hours a month. A workable schedule may be weekly or bi-weekly phone calls and a once-a-month personal meeting. You can design a flexible schedule that works for both you and your teen’s lifestyles.
