Junior Master Gardener Program
at Great Salt Bay School, Damariscotta, MaineYoung Master Gardeners with tools

The Knox-Lincoln Cooperative Extension and Pemaquid Watershed Association's "Earthways's Environmental Education Program" are developing a Junior Master Gardener curriculum for ages 8 - 12.  The program is being taught for the second time to third graders at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta.  Running about eight months of weekly sessions, it covers topics such as discovering why we need plants, botany of flowers and pollination, insect study, soils and water, conservation and recycling, among others and culminates in planning and planting a garden maintained by the students over the summer.

Like their senior counterparts, Junior Master Gardeners share their learning with others in the community.  The current group regularly bring their projects and friendship to residents of a local assisted living facility.
