INTRODUCTION: Over 40 years ago F.K. Sparrow (1960) published a monograph that covered the Chytridiomyceta and other aquatic, zoosporic fungi. This comprehensive work brought together all the literature on chytrids (excluding the pathogenic genera Synchytrium and Physoderma) since the first report by Braun in 1856. Further contributions on chytrid systematics include a key to genera (Sparrow 1973), and a list and keys to some genera and species in a book on aquatic mycology (Batko 1975). Karling's (1977) Chytridiomycetarum Iconographia represents a significant contribution. He discussed the genera of Chytridiomycetes and presented many useful drawings but did not include a comprehensive list of species. Barr (1990) reviewed ideas of the phylogeny of the Chytridiomycetes based on ultrastructural characters of the zoospore. More recently molecular based systematic studies (James et al. 2000; 2006a; 2006b) have changed our hypotheses about the groups included in the Chytridiomycota and the status (Letcher et al. 2005, 2006) of the groups within the phylum. Even with these updated hypotheses about chytrid phylogeny, no monograph has superseded that of Sparrow. New species continue to be described and taxonomic changes continue to be published, but articles are dispersed in many different journals and searches to locate all described species in a genus are laborious and time consuming.
The purpose of this bibliography, which is based on an article published in Mycotaxon (Volume 60, pp. 149-174; 1996) is to provide a listing of pertinant taxonomic literature since 1960. It includes new taxa, new combinations, and suggested synonymies since Sparrow's monograph and is updated since 1996 to include new changes and references to taxonomic summaries of several genera. For further taxonomic information, the ARS maintains a searchable Index of Fungi.
New species in certain parasitic genera are not included, namely: Coelomomyces and Physoderma (Blastocladiales) and Synchytrium (Chytridiales). Because Harpochytrium was not included in Sparrow's monograph, I have included species described previous to 1960.
CONVENTIONS: Citations contain inclusive pagination for articles rather than only the page on which the description or the taxonomic change occurs. This variance from custom is to facilitate the retrieval of entire articles via interlibrary, photocopy services. Names of new taxa above the level of species are printed entirely in upper case letters. Figures, substrates, and habitats are listed for new species.
